ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: Forced Virginity Tests

WOMEN of our WORLD Take Action!  Forced Virginity Tests in Africa, India and Middle East ... isn't this IMMORAL in itself, as there is zero dignity or respect in the action. Can you imagine being forced to have virginity tests and then if it turns out that you are not a virgin, you would be charged with prostitution? Seems far fetched and downright ridiculous but this is the reality for Egyptian protesters. Amnesty International has today called on the Egyptian authorities to … [Read more...]

ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: Grandma and Goliath

Grandma and Goliath         Grandmother Takes on Oil Giant ...   Recently I read what can only be called a modern day David and Goliath story. The two contenders are an Ecuadorean grandmother whose modest home sits near marshes that are clogged with sticky oil for decades and Chevron. Maria Aguinda helped to bring a landmark judgment against Chevron for polluting the rain forest which she calls home. She spoke out against the US oil giant after it was fined $9.5 billion, among the … [Read more...]

ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: Child Brides

Child Brides ...      When I heard the news report about 12 year old girls from B.C. were being given as brides to polygamists, I was shocked and disgusted.  "They are still children!"  They aren't even developed fully yet. and what disturbed me the most was that their parents sanctioned this. Marriage, according to documents filed in B.C. Supreme Court Friday. The girls were “sealed for time and eternity” in religious ceremonies to Warren Jeffs, the prophet of the Fundamentalist Church … [Read more...]

Teacher's Strike in Bahrain     This morning on CityPulse, I saw that there was a teachers' strike in Bahrain. There was a shot of Arab women sitting in an empty classroom. Their angry faces and gestures reflected … [Read more...]

ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: Know Your Rights!

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS !   Years ago I was asked by Equality Now to write a letter to His Excellency Yoweri Museveni, the President of Uganda regarding the Land Act. It seems that even though a woman’s right to property is protected under the Ugandan law, in rural areas this is abused , ignored or overlooked. The letter was written to urge His Excellency to publicly support and ensure the swift passage of the co-ownership amendment to the Land Act which would prevent women like Mariam Kabeere … [Read more...]
