ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: China's Unwanted Girls

ADELE BUTLER - Women of Spirit       China's Unwanted Girls   Today marks the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day and this morning I heard on The Current that there has been some progress in women’s fight for equality but there is still much to be done. I just read the same thing on Yahoo News. "The last century has seen an unprecedented expansion of women's legal rights and entitlements," Bachelet said, pointing to virtually universal voting rights for women, major inroads for … [Read more...]

FORUM 18 NEWS SERVICE, Oslo, Norway   Turkey does not recognise the right to conscientious objection to military service, along with countries such as Azerbaijan, Belarus, Turkmenistan and – in practice – Armenia, Forum 18 News Service notes. Without recognition of this right – which is embedded in the right to freedom of religion or belief - and even lack of any regulations to address their situation, conscientious objectors find themselves in an unending cycle of prosecution – … [Read more...]

ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: Forced to Be Sex Slaves in Mexico

WOMEN of SPIRIT Forced to Be Sex Slaves in MEXICO Imagine being called “merchandise” and being forced into prostitution after you have been tricked into making the dangerous journey across Central America in the hope of a better life before being stopped en route in southern Mexico and forced to work for nothing. This was the nightmarish reality for migrants. When Patricia Villamil, the Honduran counsil in Mexico’s southern Chiapas state took on her job last November, she … [Read more...]

ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: Children Are Not For Sex, Atlanta!

A Celebration of Women "Seek justice, encourage the oppressed. Defend the cause of the fatherless, plead the case of the widow.” Isaiah 1:17 If you think that sex trafficking takes place only in developing countries, think again. I watched a video featuring Ashley Judd who introduced the panel “‘No Such Thing’: Trafficking of Girls in the United States” for the 2nd annual “Women In The World” summit) the weekend of March 10-12 in New York City. In it she shared a heartwrenching … [Read more...]

ADELE BUTLER - Women of Spirit: Elder Abuse     Elder Abuse Victims Act of 2009 (House Resolution 448)   “Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God.  I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:32, NI)   Last month we celebrated my mother’s 80th birthday. I was thrilled that my fiancé and her only grandchild were there for the momentous occasion. As I looked at her I couldn’t help but feel happy that she is still around. She and I used to live together until I … [Read more...]

ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: Child Brides

Child Brides ...      When I heard the news report about 12 year old girls from B.C. were being given as brides to polygamists, I was shocked and disgusted.  "They are still children!"  They aren't even developed fully yet. and what disturbed me the most was that their parents sanctioned this. Marriage, according to documents filed in B.C. Supreme Court Friday. The girls were “sealed for time and eternity” in religious ceremonies to Warren Jeffs, the prophet of the Fundamentalist Church … [Read more...]

ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: Know Your Rights!

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS !   Years ago I was asked by Equality Now to write a letter to His Excellency Yoweri Museveni, the President of Uganda regarding the Land Act. It seems that even though a woman’s right to property is protected under the Ugandan law, in rural areas this is abused , ignored or overlooked. The letter was written to urge His Excellency to publicly support and ensure the swift passage of the co-ownership amendment to the Land Act which would prevent women like Mariam Kabeere … [Read more...]

ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: Keep Hope Alive!

Yes, we shall overcome—someday.     I am thankful that I wasn’t living in the US while segregation and blatant racism were the norm. I cannot imagine not being able to sit wherever I wanted to on the bus or drink from any water fountain or have to go to areas that said, “For Coloreds Only”. I don’t know how I would have fared during those times. Would I have turned the other cheek or would I have stood up for my rights? I would like to think that I would have done the latter. When Jesus … [Read more...]
