ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: The Golf Sensation

Adele Butler: The Golf Sensation     Zakiya Randall ___________________________________     On Sunday I was watching an interview with a young female golfer nicknamed, “Z” on CNN. I was intrigued. I never heard of Zakiya Randall. She is said to be one of the hottest driving forces in women’s golf and has ranked high or won almost every Golf Tournament or game played since she was 10 years old. It is refreshing to know that this young woman is making waves in a sport that was always … [Read more...]

WOMEN – Progress for Women IS progress for All: Volunteerism, Take Action!

Women Progress for Women Is Progress for All   They are our mothers, sisters, wives and daughters. They are our colleagues and compatriots. They account for more than half the human race. They are us. Yet women continue to face a daily struggle against violence, illiteracy and inequality for no reason other than the fact of their gender.   Tragically, one in three women can expect to be beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime, more often than not, by someone well known … [Read more...]

ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: “Please, Mommy, don’t…”

Suspect Abuse of a Child  ~  Take Action!     Last week Saturday, my two year and I were in the car while his Daddy was in the supermarket. I was sitting at the back of the car with him while he played. Things were going well for a while until he started to get into mischief. I warned him that if he continued to misbehave I would put him back into his car-seat. He didn’t listen. He thought that I was joking so when he misbehaved again, I lifted him and put him back into the car-seat. He … [Read more...]

ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: 'Bullying is Not Cool'

'Bullying is Not Cool'       Sometimes my toddler sings, “Don’t bother me” and every time he does I can’t help but smile. Once I teasingly asked him, “Who’s bothering you?” I found this amusing until this week. I got serious when I thought of Shane, a character on the soap opera, One Life to Live. I thought of what would happen if he said to the kid who was bullying him, “Don’t bother me.” It was discovered that Shane was receiving threatening messages on his laptop. This had been happening … [Read more...]

ADELE BUTLER – Women of Spirit: Reaching Out

REACHING OUT     About four years ago, my boyfriend and I were passing the homeless youth shelter and we saw a young girl sitting on the steps outside. She looked hungry and tired and as if she had the whole world on her thin shoulders. She looked up and saw us. She called out to us, asking for help. The shelter was not yet open and probably not for several hours. Fortunately it was still light and the temperature was mild. My boyfriend gave her money so that she could buy something to … [Read more...]

The HHS Office of HIV/AIDS Policy on Bullying and Teen Suicide

We recently wrote a post about the very serious problem of bullying and teen suicide. Children or adolescents who are, or are perceived to be, lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) are at particular risk. People from across the country and around the world, including President Obama and Secretary of State Clinton, have created videos to spread the message to LGBT youth that "it gets better" . The Office of HIV/AIDS Policy and AIDS.gov staff made the video below based on the … [Read more...]
