Egyptian women cast votes and rally for their country’s future

“Even if I am not going to live for very much longer, I am voting for the future of my grandchildren.” So states one elderly lady as she waits in front of a polling station in Cairo, voicing the hope and resolve of a nation going to the polls. Over 50 million voters are eligible for Egypt’s 2012 presidential elections, the first since the country’s inspiring revolution, and of them, 23 million are women. Recent UN Women’s analysis has shown that 90.3 per cent of women surveyed are willing … [Read more...]

Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting – Tide is finally turning ‘against’ FGM

For centuries, female genital mutilation or cutting has been practiced throughout much of Africa. But dealing as it does with a very intimate subject, FGM/C was often spoken of, if at all, only in whispers. Today the movement against it is open, public and highly visible. And FGM/C seems to be out in the open and on its way out. Farmers in remote villages in Mali are listening to radio talk shows debating the issue. Community groups in Senegal talk about it in terms of human rights. Islamic … [Read more...]

Afghanistan is no longer the worst place in the world to be a mother!

Afghanistan is no longer the worst place in the world to be a mother, according to a new report by Save the Children. I am at once heartened and shocked by this news. If that respected NGO can show that progress has been made in this country, it must be true, and that is a good thing. But then this means that there is a place where women risk even more to have a child than in Afghanistan. My heart goes out to the women of Niger, the new holders of this soul-wrenching title. Even … [Read more...]

Larry James ~ “My mother was a piece of work.”, said with Love.

Thank You, Mom! You Shaped Me! Happy Mothers Day – 2012! My mother was a piece of work. She bought me a $10 used bicycle and a large basket when I was ten years old and pushed me out the door to go door-to-door selling boxes of all occasion greeting cards to make extra money. There were 21 cards in a box for $1.00. She put together a make-shift accounting method so I could know when I needed to order new merchandise and how much I was making per item sold. I became immune to the … [Read more...]

CARE – Honor your mother and empower another‏

A mother is a nurturer, protector and so much more. But too many mothers suffer a cruel fate: their own death or the death of their child because the world is failing to help. This year, 1,000 mothers a day will die during pregnancy and childbirth. And 21,000 children younger than age 5 will die every day. Nearly all of these deaths occur in poor countries — and the biggest tragedy is that we know how to prevent almost all of these deaths. You can be the difference for a … [Read more...]
