Chicago Teachers Awarded Damages for Pregnancy Discrimination

Eight women who were fired from their teaching positions following the announcements of their pregnancies will receive nearly $300,000 in damages and back pay. In a lawsuit filed against the Chicago Board of Education late last year, the Department of Justice (DOJ) claimed the principal of Chicago's Scammon Elementary School fired, threatened to fire, and evaluated poorly the performances of pregnant teachers, with the Board consenting to as many as six of the resulting firings. Saudi Arabian Women cast their first votes in the country’s history

Women in Saudi Arabia have cast their first votes in the country's history, in municipal elections. Women were also standing as candidates, another first, despite the conservative kingdom being the only nation where women are not allowed to drive. A total of 978 women have registered as candidates, alongside 5,938 men. Female candidates have had to speak behind a partition while campaigning or be represented by a man.
