Circuits of Self
in Forgiveness
and Karma
[a transcription of a meditation session]
The name of the session is Circuits of Self in Forgiveness and Karma.
And I guess by way of preliminary remarks,
R.Z. has been studying Sanskrit and on the front cover
they give an example of some Sanskrit terms.
And one of the Sanskrit terms that they mention is karma.
And one of the understandings of karma that we can consider,
is what we might call inertia.
But the inertia of what?
It would mean that we would probably be helped
by understanding something about relativity.
In the ordinary experience of the physical world on the surface of the earth,
if we let go of something it falls.
And Newton certainly helped us with precision
and the ability to precisely predict the behaviour of the physical universe
in the first scientific revolution.
But what occurred in the scientific revolution at the beginning of this century,
was that we began to understand that the kind of consequences involved
in letting go of something in space are that it floats.
If it is in motion it continues in motion, until it strikes something
that either causes it to rebound or causes it to stop.
I think we can understand that karma is like the carry-forward involved
in spatial inertia.
But the spatial inertia of what?
When we introduce the concept of the circuits of self,
we need to realize the extent to which we want or need
a delay in consequences, and as we want or need a delay in consequences
the way we generate the delay in consequences is by means of separation,
by means of isolation, by means of closing off,
cutting yourself off from the flow of consequences.
And so what occurs is that that separation persists, with inertia, as karma.
As we need a delay in consequences.
Why would we need a delay in consequences?
Because we are creators being created.
And as creators being created we are learning how things work.
But at the same time, we are creators being created, we are not creatures.
And so what occurs is that we need the operation of free will,
which comes from the privilege of having a delay in consequences.
Now what occurs is that with the circuits of self involved in karma,
we need to say: when, where, how, by what means,
do we gain the cessation of that inertia?
that carry-forward of separation of isolation?
For we feel the boundaries of forgetfulness,
of not knowing where we have come from, not knowing what we have been,
not knowing what we have done, before our emergence in this physical life
on this physical occasion.
And we want to be able to penetrate that larger context
but we are forbidden from doing so by karma,
by the inertia of these circuits of self.
And so we find the means by which these carry-forward…,
this carry-forward occurs, by means of forgiveness.
And that becomes an alternative circuit of self.
As an alternative circuit of self, we found on the one occasion
that we needed a delay of consequences
so we needed to create a disconnection, and that meant a closure
in the domains associated with the action
for which we needed a delay in consequences.
So as those closures occurred, we began to cease to exchange
with that realm of consequences that would normally flow
from our actions as a creator.
Now what happens is that as we create those closures, as we bear karma,
and we bear the carry-forward of that karma, we begin to accumulate,
we begin to accrue more and more and more and more of these closures,
and more and more of these disconnections.
And we find ourselves on the one hand requiring some means
of opening them again.
And so life is of such a nature that we are brought back
to face the consequences, in disguise.
That is, those of us who meet one another again, meet one another in disguise,
because we have already polarized,
that is we have already closed the domains, as a result of the guilt we feel
and the need for the delay in consequences.
And so we have a mechanism of avoidance,
and we have a desire for that delay in consequences to go again.
But when and how shall we be harvestable?
When and how shall we be able to progress?
When and how shall we be redeemed from these closures,
freed from the inertia of karma?
The only means by which we can be redeemed is by forgiveness.
But it seems as though what is happening
is that we are forgiving someone else, when what indeed
we are really doing is forgiving ourselves,
because of who and what the self is, when the domains are opened.
When the domains are open, the self is a centre
where convergence and divergence occurs.
It is a node, it is a field, it is a being and doing that is constantly increasing
in its acknowledgement of a greater number of forces and motions
in the universe;
in the plurality of realities.
And how is it that forgiveness operates?
Well, what happens is that we have catalysts.
These catalysts are things that implement reactions
without themselves being affected.
These catalysts are things that hold the reactants in position
in order for the reaction to take place.
And the reaction that we are speaking about in this case,
is the reaction of the opening of the domain,
the action of the breaking of the inertia of karma,
the action of forgiveness.
One such catalyst is pain.
Pain gathers and holds your attention, and it holds you in position,
with a contemplation of you being able to forgive
in response to the catalytic function of pain.
And we have discussed before how we could live our lives
navigating off of pain.
We could live our lives like we were driving down the motorway,
and we had the centre way and the curbs,
and the way we define where we travel
is by banging off the centre barrier to start with,
and then banging off the outer barrier,
going back and banging off the centre barrier,
then going back and banging off the outer barrier,
and that is how we find the road.
And there are some of us that live that way some of the time.
But realize that each one of those collisions is colliding with a barrier
that we have created, a barrier which involved a closure in our domains.
And the closure in our domains occurred
because of the pursuit of this delay of consequences.
And so we find that we requisition pain
when we are unwilling by means of avoidance and evasion
to face our experience,
and realize our experience is very benevolent.
Our experience is not meant to torment us.
Our experience is meant to guide us into a harvestable condition
of infinite intelligence.
Forgiveness, then has as its seeds: tolerance, patience, understanding.
And as we begin to acquire those qualities,
we begin to eliminate the need for pain as the catalyst for transformation
and opening of domains.
As we begin to relax the hold on the conserved and separated
and isolated self, we begin to open the domains.
Tonight, I’d like us to think about those qualities
and the techniques associated with them.
Whenever we find within ourselves intolerance, we have a signal.
It is a signal for an area where we lack forgiveness.
And it may seem as though what we are forgiving is someone else.
But in the same way that love operates, where as we pour forth love,
love is an energy, and love is a pattern.
That energy will either penetrate, will enter the one we love,
and will transform.
Or, if that person holds the closure, if that person holds the separation
and isolation of self, that same love
that otherwise would become an attractant force and even a binding force,
an anchorage, a freedom gain, a freedom to be near,
that same force that can produce the freedom to be near,
the force of attraction, the force of anchorage and binding,
can produce a force of expelling, and as those who would love,
we can never want to control another,
and have the carry-forward, the karma, the inertia,
of wanting to control another.
Why were we given free will?
Because we are also intended to be companions.
And to be companions we needed the free will of the delay in consequences.
And there is a preserved distinction between having free will
and using it in the direction of harmonic and open interaction,
and not having free will –
of having inevitable and cascading consequences.
We suit ourselves for companionship,
and that companionship follows the teaching,
“How can he who claims to know God, who claims to love God,
fail to love his brother man?”.
This was not a description of a rule that was to be kept,
it is a description of the way things work, because remember
we are part of All That Is, we are part of the divine, we are part of God.
And the part can contain the whole by connection, by anchorage,
when we abandon the closures which we are empowered to do with free will.
So the way that we stop a kind of reality created by karma
is with the agency of forgiveness.
And with the seeds of forgiveness, in tolerance, in patience,
and in understanding, the way that we exert a power in this world,
is to be tolerant, to be patient, to be forgiving, to perpetuate understanding.
Think of whether or not we ever want to have recourse to the catalyst of pain.
What we want to do is to be so ready, so open, so given, so yielded,
so receptive, using our free will to be a companion,
and it will, by that means, satisfy the anchorage we have in one another,
that prevents that recoil from the love that is poured out towards us
and is awaiting our acceptance.
And our acceptance constitutes the opening of the domains
that require the delay in consequence.
How important it is to say, “I can bear the consequences, of every fault,
of every mistake, of every error, of every sin,
I can bear the consequences through forgiveness”.
And we can invoke the opening, we can invoke the overcoming
of that yearning within us, that longingness, that loneliness,
by means of an openness right here, right now, this night.
We can say, I invoke forgiveness, and that must contain within you,
your unique experience of forgiving yourself,
and attaining an innocence, attaining a guiltlessness.
Why is it that it could be said that at the end of the age,
there would come a time
when if anyone were to ingest something poisonous
it would not hurt them because there isn’t anything poisonous
to such a one?
Why is it it could say that the lion will lie down with the lamb?
Because the karma, the inertia being carried forward
in the creation itself is being overcome.
Think of the power within you right now to forgive.
Regardless of how great the wrong may have seemed,
regardless of how justified the anger may have seemed,
regardless of how appropriate the curse may have seemed, call it back.
Whatever behaviour upon whatever front you may have ever seen,
the person that stands before us threatening, cursing, hating,
is the most to be pitied.
For the barrier that they intend in the process of hate
can never be positioned around the object of hate
but only around the one who does the hating.
But we have been blessed with a reality with limited consequences,
very appropriate for creators being created.
And even though it is valuable for us to feel as though the pain we may feel,
and the sourness, the bitterness that we may have allowed
in the face of some pain, when we have been
projecting the agency upon others, the reason for us thinking
that the experience was the product of others only,
is because of our own separation.
And it has only been the fact that the universe is so marvellously constructed
that the circuits of our creation come back to us in disguise
and we must forgive.
So when there was mocking, forgive.
When there was a put-down, forgive. You are forgiving yourself.
Refrain yourself of karma.
You’re anchoring yourself in All That Is, and with that anchorage
you cease to recoil from the love poised.
Just flood right into the very fund of your being and the joy that waits.
The seeds are tolerance, the seeds are patience, the seeds are understanding,
the practice is forgiveness, the consequence is the opening of those closures,
and the flowing of the one consequence – harvesting,
satisfying that loneliness, that yearning,
that longing that is deep within us.
When the circuits of self are closed and schemes too small,
we go through transitions, when there may be
some one person with whom we relax, with whom we exchange
to a greater extent,
and that becomes the seed of our total opening.
What happens emotionally, when you let go?
What happens within consciousness when you let go?
Just say to yourself, “I will be the catalyst of tolerance,
I will be the catalyst of patience, I will be the catalyst of understanding,
for I forgive.
And even though I now have a forgiving
because I must not remember what I cannot forgive,
as I forgive I remember, and as I remember I open,
and as I open I understand, I know”.
Ooh.
With that understanding, a cascading of love flows.
Not kept love, not hoarded love, not conditioned love, but flowing love.
Love we may have spilled for our own lack of forgiveness.
Allow that state and that condition to distribute deeply
and completely within you.
Feel how unnecessary defence is.
There is no defence required.
You can ask to be known, you can ask for the consequences to befall you,
you can ask to be open.
And you can be innocent even though not without fault, not without error,
not without mistake, not without sin, yet you can be innocent,
for you have appropriated forgiveness.
And when you have stood before others, angry, threatening, thin-lipped,
tight, tense, ferocious, realize you’re the witness of a state
from which it is possible to be redeemed,
even a state you may have been in.
The desperate of every kind, are redeemable.
And our great work on this earth is to have a familiar way
that brings us into range, that allows us to guide people.
But without it ever being known, we tonight can abundantly forgive.
We can forgive ourselves for being pathetic, for being weak,
for being intolerant.
We can forgive ourselves for being fierce, for being manipulative.
We can forgive ourselves for anger.
Blessed are the pure in heart for they shall see God.
Just appropriate that purity, right now, and see what opens.
With every breath, relax. Release.
Allow the surfaces which confined and bounded
to be penetrated and dissolved, and the diffusion of your being,
and whatever beauty you find, let that beauty be nourished with your mind.
Whatever goodness you find and know and even imagine,
let that goodness be your goodness, nourished with your mind.
Whatever nobility and virtue, whatever morality, whatever kindness,
whatever wholeness, whatever integrity, open yourself to it.
Live.
There is a tide of being to which we have been asleep.
And so this can become an awakening.
With remembering comes forgiveness.
So with every breath in, stand before the universe, open,
stand before the universe, innocent,
eradicating every consequence of every error with forgiveness.
And allow the transformations to occur.
However receptive you feel, increase that yielding,
increase that responsiveness, increase that sense of alive,
accountable readiness.
We can do something and we can be something that acknowledges,
that gives room to and room for all else in the universe.
There is no meagreness in what we are, only as we consent to it.
And our real power shows,
not when we face what, for some, is terror, unaffected
for we understand, but that to which we can open
is only limited by our forgiveness.
Find remembering, overcome forgetting, accept the power of forgiveness.
Let the circuit of self be open, let the karma be stopped.
Nothing we have ever been, nothing we have ever done, disqualifies you,
it only qualifies you by showing you how things work.
So where society may have preserved its guilt, its anger, its mocking,
its rejection, we cannot.
What a release. What a relaxation.
What a sense of safety and well-being.
As you overcome forgetting, and as you gain remembering,
regain understanding.
Regain love, regain anchorage. regain wholeness.
Ask to stand before the very source of our being.
Seek that light, and whatever falls from you, whatever is released,
will not diminish you.
With every sigh, with every outbreath, reach.
Reach with a yielding, with a receptivity, with a softness.
Reach with an innocence, reach with a kind of letting go,
reach with a ready turning towards light.
Reach, ready and willing to be known, deeply known, completely known,
and you will not be judged.
There is no book to learn, there is no being to know.
There is no punishment, nor reward.
These are conjured consequences.
There is only transformation, there is only opening.
What may have seemed mystical is real,
and what has been regarded as real is but a shadow.
Turn from the shadow and turn towards the real part
of your whole being forgotten, for lack of forgiveness,
forgotten in intolerance, forgotten in impatience,
forgotten in misunderstanding.
Open the circuit of self. Let go.
There is a presence that only we can allow,
there is a welcome that we must extend
and if the world has so difficultly welcomed us,
how much more difficultly can it welcome
more of who and what we are.
And if there are those that we wouldn’t have welcomed,
how could we provide for a being to come amongst us.
If it is said, that the very source of our being is to return within a number of years,
we must provide readiness and the welcome.
Perhaps we may be vanguards of its coming.
Can you present yourself to the universe?
With every breath in, present yourself, submitted, open, powerful, innocent,
yielded, receptive, with free will, yet tuned.
Spirit of the living God, fall to flesh on us.
Spirit within all nature, fill us with the power of nature itself.
Spirit in-dwelling, the vastness of the universe, infinite intelligence,
dwell within us, express through us.
Awaken to your greater being, to your greater self, to your greater nature.
