The True Meaning of Thanksgiving is happening in Ottawa, CANADA
…. heart warming read.
A group of students chose to spend part of their holiday weekend giving back, serving a free Thanksgiving dinner at a west Ottawa high school. The Thanksgiving Dinner Tradition at Sir Guy Carleton High School has been happening for 20 years, with hundreds of seniors, homeless people and those struggling financially picked up by the busload.
Ottawa resident Margaret O’Brien said without this, she’d have nowhere else to go.
“We’d do without,” she said. “We’d probably have peanut butter sandwiches.”
O’Brien said she’s on social assistance, takes two kinds of insulin and has an adult daughter who uses a wheelchair.
“I don’t get too much to live on. And I have diabetes and they cut my diet money to $86,” she said.
“I’m supposed to eat three meals a day plus snacks and everything. I can’t afford that.”
The students and teachers who volunteer said they get a lot out of the dinner as well.”I was adopted when I was younger and so I could have ended up needing this kind of stuff,” said student Ruby Pascoe.
“Some of our students come back again to serve,” said teacher Ed Mahfouz. “It makes it easier for us.”In the five hours the dinner is open, the volunteers will serve about 1,000 servings of food, as well as distribute clothing donations. With a report from CTV Ottawa’s Stefan Keyes , www.ctvottawa.ca
