Chernobyl child, Belarus – 8 Year Old Child needs bone marrow transplantation

He is now 8 years old (his birthday is on 04.07.2003), and first time he got into the hospital in the beginning of year 2010 with diagnosis Acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In the end of 2010 he finished the treatment and returned home.

But in August 2011 the relapse happened and he again got to the same hospital. This time he was treated with a stronger chemotherapy, but in March, 2012 the doctors informed that he still has cancer cells in his bone marrow (31%), and thet the only thing that could save him is high-dose chemotherapy and autologous bone marrow transplantation.

Due to price, distance, language , etc. reasons the parents decided to go to Belarus (we have good experience as for Ukrainian children treatment there). So, first Denys’ father urgently went to Minsk in the end of March and brought there Denys’, mothers’ and his blood for analysis (to define whether him or Denys’ mother could be a donor), then we together collected about 25 000 USD (about 4 500 USD was borrowed by Denys’ parents from relatives, about 9 000 USD were given by the parents of another child who already finished the treatment in Belarus, the rest we, volunteers and parents, collected) and sent Denys with his mother to Minsk. This money was enough for 1 course of high-dose chemotherapy.

If Denys is not in remission, then another course shall be necessary (the total amount could be 30-40 thousand USD). The next step is launching a non-relative donor search (as his parents cannot be the donor for him), check of the donor, the material probing, etc. More probably, that one Ukrainian fund will pay for this procedure (about 20 thousand USD).

So, when the donor is found, we’ll need to provide 70 000 USD for the procedure of bone marrow transplantation. This may happen in one month, or in 3 months depending on how soon the donor is found, checked, etc. Normally, in Ukraine it’s possible to get some help from Ministry of Health, but last time they gave money for this procedure in August, 2011, and the queue of children waiting is about 43 children…

After transplantation most probably additional treatment shall be necessary, which could amount up to 55 000 USD (see the Invitation from Belarus).

So, the first aim is to obtain remission of Denys (we will find additional money if necessary),

then to pay 70 000 USD for bone marrow transplantation

then to find 55 000 USD (maybe less) for final treatment.

We already applied to a German fund Ein Herz fur Kinder, they promissed to pay 10 000 euro for Denys. Also we keep collecting money here, in Ukraine. Denys’ father already addressed to several mines, also he plans to address to metallurgical enterprises in Donetsk. Maybe they will help with some money, but I am sure that not so big….

So, I wrote to you all this story in detail in order you could see that we dont just wait, we do our best to find money. And father of this boy is also very active! But we have too little time to save Denys…
