Antiretrovirals Protects Partners from Infection

NIH Research Update:

Treating HIV-infected People with Antiretrovirals Protects Partners from Infection

NIAID

Today the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), released findings from a large-scale clinical study. This study found that men and women living with HIV who took oral antiretroviral medicines when their immune systems were relatively healthy, were able to reduce the risk of transmitting the virus to their sexual partners.
In addition, HIV positive individuals cannot assume they are not infectious simply because they are already on treatment medications.
