World Malaria Day
Stop a Silent Killer on World Malaria Day
April 25, 2011
Every year, malaria claims the lives of over a million people, many of them young children.
Even more heartbreaking is the fact that this deadly disease is preventable.
Bestnet Reveals Plans for World Malaria Day
“April 25th is rapidly approaching!
Like many NGO’s, NMCPs and faith based organizations, Bestnet has been busy finalizing our plans for World Malaria Day 2011. This year, many Bestnet representatives and our agents will be spending the day with children in local primary schools in sub- Sharan Africa and around the globe to spread the message that sleeping under a Netprotect® LLIN saves lives.
Children in schools in countries such as Ecuador, Senegal, Togo, Ivory Coast, Niger and Nigeria, just to name a few locations, will be participating in a specially designed program on World Malaria Day to educate them about the cause and prevention of malaria. And their teachers that day will be representatives of Bestnet and our agents!
Bestnet has prepared a special malaria education kit for use in the classrooms which consists of poster board presentations to help the children learn about malaria and how to prevent it. Additionally, the children will be given special drawing pads and colored pencils and will be encouraged to create artwork, poems and stories about how happy they are not to have malaria and about the lessons they learned that day.
Every child will also be encouraged to provide a sample of their creative artwork or literature to Bestnet, so that it can be shared with other children around the globe. It is Bestnet’s intention to make these drawings and artworks freely available to as broad of an audience around the world as possible. Current plans include posting artwork on the Bestnet website, using the original artwork and literature in other malaria educational materials and making the children’s creations into a book that will be distributed to our customers and partners around the world
At the end of the day, each child will be given a package of materials to bring home, including a family sized Netprotect® LLIN, and encouraged to go home and educate their other family members about the lessons they learned that day about sleeping under a bednet. In addition to the drawing pads, colored pencils and Netprotect® LLINs, the children will also be given colorful t-shirts and other assorted goodies – all specially designed to spread the message that bednets save lives!
In the world’s poorest areas, families spend as much as 30% of their income on malaria prevention and treatment. That’s why Freedom from Hunger relies on support from people like you to fund vital programs like Saving for Change. http://www.bestneteurope.com/NewsMedia.aspx?Action=1&NewsId=63&PID=845
We’re working to help very poor women learn about malaria, save their money and build useful “nest eggs” that they can access in times of emergency.
Saving for Change gives women access to resources they need to save their children and protect their families from malaria…without having to sacrifice food!”
By participating in World Malaria Day, you will help:
- educate women on how malaria is spread, who is most susceptible, and how to give anti-malarial drugs in dosages that are safe for very young children.
- support self-managed saving and lending groups so that women can better manage their money and have the resources they need to tackle deadly diseases like malaria.
This combination of education and prevention not only empowers women to protect their families… it saves lives!
