Dear Catherine Anne and the women of A Celebration of Women, I wanted to update you on just some of the recent campaigns IFAW has been working on. Of course, as I write this, IFAW staffers around the world are working diligently to rescue and protect animals, including in Egypt, where we are providing funds for local groups to save the lives of innocent animals left abandoned because of the political situation. Our Egypt campaign is just the beginning of what could be many more months of lifesaving support for animals in the region. We couldn’t do this vital work for animals without the support of so many generous animal lovers. You can help us continue our lifesaving work by donating today. As always, thank you for all you do for animals.
Cyclone Yasi Response
IFAW Responds to Help Wildlife after Massive Cyclone Batters Queensland, Australia Fresh from an emergency response to historic flooding in the same region, IFAW’s Emergency Relief Team was back in Queensland after huge cyclone Yasi smashed into the northeast coast of Australia. IFAW’s team traveled through the province to check on the needs of local caregivers, and is providing funds to help these dedicated local groups rebuild and resume their critical work.IFAW’s Emergency Relief Responder, Tania Duratovic, submitted this report.
Good News for Whales
Japan’s Whaling Fleet Leaves Antarctica Early On the morning of February 16, news came that Japan’s whaling fleet had fled their hunting grounds off the coast of Antarctica — only halfway through their hunting season. IFAW’s Whales Campaign Director, Patrick Ramage, hopes that this is a first sign that Japan is recognizing that there is no future for whaling.Read Patrick’s blog about Japan’s whaling fleet’s early departure.
Seal Campaign Update
EU to Canada: No Means No The Canadian Government has challenged the European Union ban on seal products at the World Trade Organization. The challenge comes at a cost of about $10 million dollars – about ten times what the hunt brings in annually – and at a time when the majority of Canadians would rather see the hunt phased out and economic alternatives developed for the sealers and their communities.IFAW’s tireless Seal Campaign Director, Sheryl Fink, put the challenge in perspective.
India Elephant Move
Five Elephants Successfully Released, IFAW Mourns Loss of One What was supposed to be a day of great celebration turned mournful when one of six elephants being released back to the wild in India took ill and died just before the move was to begin. With the loss of “Deepa” heavy on their hearts, the staff diligently moved the other five elephants, who adapted quickly to their new surroundings.Read Fred’s blog about the move and the loss of Deepa.
