The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Yaounde, organized several events in collaboration with the UN Gender Group and the Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and the Family (MINPROFF) to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and 16 Days of Activism to End Violence against Women (25 November – 10 December 2010) in Yaounde, Cameroon.
The 16 Days of Activism in Cameroon announcing events were held across the National territory including the set-up of special units to Fight FGM in Mamfe, South West Region and Garoua, North Region sponsored by UNFPA. The theme chosen for this year campaign was: “Cameroon and the International Community: Participative Engagement and Synergy for the Fight Violence against Women and Girls.”
UNIC’s National Information Officer Anne Nsang was co-moderator of the event with the MINPROFF Protocol Officer, and white ribbons were ‘pinned unto’ all participants who were also entertained with short films on the subject: VAW produced by DPI, UNFPA, UNESCO, projected before the official messages of the event.
UNIC Yaounde also ensured media coverage of the event and interviews on radio, TV and a Newspaper “supplement”.
