WOMEN in PEACEKEEPING is Critical
The rape of women at a peaceful rally in Conakry in Guinea in September last year has demonstrated the vulnerability of women in West Africa, according to the top United Nations envoy in the region.
Said Djinnit, made the comments while marking the 10th anniversary of Security Council resolution 1325 which calls for the involvement of women in peacemaking and post-conflict reconstruction.
Mr. Djinnit recalled that a declaration adopted by West African countries in Dakar, Senegal at a regional forum entitled “Women Count for Peace”.
“The incidents of September 2009 in Conakry have shown the vulnerability of women in West Africa and the need therefore to redouble efforts to implement resolution 1325. And this is definitely based on the Dakar Forum, in which all member states represented, including Guinea, committed to have national plans to follow up on 1325.”
