women from around the globe

December 2025 has been a month of significant news for women globally, highlighting the ongoing challenges and efforts to address gender inequality and violence. Here are some of the key points from the month:

UNRWA: The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign calls on global action to confront the root causes of gender inequality and the violence it fuels, especially in humanitarian crises. Women frontline staff face increased workloads and risks while sustaining their families in deteriorating conditions.

UNICEF: The UN Children’s Fund reported that starving mothers in Gaza are giving birth to underweight or premature babies, with many dying in intensive care due to malnutrition. The UN Children’s Fund emphasizes the need for more goods in markets to reduce prices and ensure families can afford them.

Investing in girls’ education transforms communities, countries and the entire world. Girls who receive an education are less likely to marry young and more likely to lead healthy, productive lives. They earn higher incomes, participate in the decisions that most affect them, and build better futures for themselves and their families.

Gender Bias in AI: A UN Women article discusses how artificial intelligence reinforces gender bias and perpetuates discrimination against women and girls. The article calls for responsible AI development and research teams to be diverse and inclusive, and for strong ethical frameworks to be adopted.

Five steps to more inclusive AI systems

1. Using diverse and representative data sets to train AI systems
2. Improving the transparency of algorithms in AI systems
3. Making sure AI development and research teams are diverse and inclusive to avoid blind spots
4. Adopting strong ethical frameworks for AI systems
5. Integrating gender-responsive policies in developing AI systems

Artificial Intelligence can be used to reduce or perpetuate the biases and inequalities in our societies. Here are five steps that Villar recommends to make AI inclusive – and better.

Women’s Rights: Various news articles discuss the U.K. Equality Act, which allows trans women to be excluded from certain spaces, and a 2023 Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Iran’s jailed women’s rights advocate Narges Mohammadi. These stories reflect the ongoing struggle for women’s rights and the need for continued advocacy and action.

In 2025, Maria Corina Machado also wins Nobel, a woman that has led the struggle for democracy in the face of ever-expanding authoritarianism in Venezuela. Ms. Machado studied engineering and finance, and had a short career in business. In 1992 she established the Atenea Foundation, which works to benefit street children in Caracas.

These articles reflect the ongoing efforts and challenges faced by women globally, and the importance of continued advocacy and action to ensure gender equality and protect women’s rights.
