The International Day of Families is observed on the 15th of May every year. The International Day of Families provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting them. It has inspired a series of awareness-raising events, including national family days. In many countries, this day is an opportunity to highlight different areas of interest and importance to families.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FAMILIES HISTORY

International Day of Families logoBeginning in the 1980s, the United Nations started to focus attention on the issues related to the family.
1983 – Secretary-General moved to enhance awareness among decision-makers and the public of the problems and needs of the family.
1989 – The General Assembly proclaimed The International Year of the Family.
1993 – The U.N. General Assembly declared May 15 of every year should be observed as the International Day of Families.

Theme: Family-oriented Policies for Sustainable Development: Towards the Second World Summit for Social Development 2025

The 2025 observance of the International Day of Families (IDF) aims to:

  • Note the importance of family policy focus in the upcoming Second World Summit for Social Development
  • Present an analysis of family policies and issues in National Voluntary Reviews 2020-2024
  • Review the major initiatives undertaken as part of the preparations for and observance of the thirtieth anniversary of the
  • International Year of the Family (IYF+30)
  • Present good practices in family policymaking at regional and national levels
  • Recommend family-oriented policies for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development
  • The International Day of Families is observed on 15 May every year. This Day was proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1993 with resolution A/RES/47/237 and reflects the importance the international community attaches to families. The International Day provides an opportunity to promote awareness of issues relating to families and to increase knowledge of the social, economic and demographic processes affecting families.
