How to Get Stubborn Stains Out of Your Carpet

You’ve likely experienced the feeling of dread when you walk in to see that the kids have been finger painting on your living room carpet or something like it. Maybe Fido’s potty-training isn’t going so well, and he’s had yet another accident on the carpet. There is a long list of substances that can stain your carpet, and most are not easy to get out. Spills on the carpet are inevitable, so here are some ways to get out the most stubborn of stains.

Hire a Professional

The best way to get stubborn stains out from your carpet, regardless of origin, is to hire a professional. By purchasing a plethora of strong cleaners and scrubbing your carpet, you’ll not only waste money, but you’ll risk damaging your carpet even more. Each stain is unique and needs a distinctive approach to remove it. Experts of professional carpet cleaning London can clean deep stains out of even the most delicate carpets without damaging them.

Act Fast

The best chance you have of getting out the stain yourself is to act quickly. When the accident happens, blot the spot immediately to soak up as much of the mess as possible. Once you’ve blotted as much as you can, rinse the area with hot water and proceed again until dry. Avoid scrubbing as the stain will spread and bleed out further.

White Vinegar

Vinegar has been used for years to clean and disinfect surfaces. It can also lift out water-soluble stains. You can make your own mixture using white vinegar, some mild detergent and water. It will only work for water-soluble stains such as sodas, food dyes, berries, wet paint, mud or washable ink. You can also use this solution for urine. It may have trouble lifting out tougher stains from coffee, tea or blood, though if you act fast, it may be effective.

Ammonia

For tougher stains, you can try a solution of ammonia and water. You’ll want to mix 2 litres of warm water with 1 cup of ammonia. The mixture will help remove coffee, wine, and bloodstains, but there is a slight risk. Ammonia will ruin carpets that contain natural fibers such as wool, so make sure your carpets are synthetic before choosing this option. It is quite a harsh chemical and has the potential to degrade synthetic fibers as well if left on for too long.

Rubbing Alcohol

If the kids were getting a bit crazy with the Krazy Glue, you could use rubbing alcohol to get it out of your carpet. Soak a cloth in rubbing alcohol and press it onto the spot that has the glue. The glue should become moist with the rubbing alcohol and you can wipe it away. You may need to repeat this a couple of times to get it all off.

When it comes to your carpets, it’s always best to have a professional come in and clean them for you. They know how to handle even the toughest stains without causing further damage to your carpets and making them look fresh and new.
