Tricks To Help Female Drivers Get Cheaper Car Insurance

Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon sparked outrage earlier this year when he announced that single women should pay more for car insurance than married females. Despite evidence revealing that men are 3.4 times more likely than females to get a ticket for reckless driving, female drivers are still being viewed as the weaker sex behind the wheel. But there’s no need to stand for this, as there are things women drivers can do to stop their car insurance from spiraling.

Choose a Compact Car

Women are savvier car buyers than men, typically opting for smaller cars that are cheaper to insure. A two-year study recently found that females in the U.S. favor the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Beetle. In comparison, men prefer larger vehicles like the Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, which are more expensive to insure due to their large engines. Even if the Fiesta and Beetle aren’t a women’s preferred choice of vehicle, there are numerous vehicles on the market that are compact, economical, and cheaper to insure, so there’s no need for any single woman to be hit with higher insurance premiums.

Drive Safe

Donelon also announced that insurers in Louisiana charge single women more than married women because they are under the assumption that they are a greater risk. This is despite the fact that over a 40-year period, twice as many male drivers lost their lives on the road than females. A three-month legislature session is currently underway in the state and many senators are fighting for change so that driver behavior is considered instead. Women drivers, therefore, need to continue driving safely and adhering to the law to demonstrate that they are less of a risk on the road than men.

Only make Essential Journeys

Research shows that male drivers drive an average of 6,000 more miles per year than women. The less a driver is on the road, the less likely they are to be involved in an accident, caught speeding, and similar activities, which is why some insurers offer low mileage insurance at discounted rates. So, women drivers looking for cheap insurance should keep to driving as few miles as possible and ensure that they accurately declare their mileage to their insurance company to benefit.

Women drivers are being penalized on their car insurance based on their marital status. But they should feel empowered by these ways to obtain car insurance for less.
