Changing the Past
[transcription from meditation / information session]
(It was) the day after our trip to Sir Sandford Fleming.
In the car as we were driving yesterday to Lindsay, we stospped for breakfast
early in the morning and I think something just naturally came to the surface.
What occurred is that there was a case history
where this psychiatrist named Milton Erikson, was such a capable therapist,
had had a woman come to him and as she described her problem,
her image of her problem was that she had lacked having a friend in her childhood
and Erickson had a very direct approach to almost everything.
Because he had such a direct approach,
and of course he was a very skilled hypnotherapist,
perhaps the most skilled in modern times, if not all time,
and his very direct approach was to regress her.
And as he regressed her, he took her back to her early childhood
and said there is the doorbell and someone is at the door.
And I want you to go to the door.
And she goes to the door, and he said, I’m at the door and I’m your friend.
The whole course of the therapy was for Erickson to listen to her and be her friend
during that childhood period and have her talk, talk on as a child,
needing that friend, and for him to be that friend to her.
And as soon as she would come to a point where she would say
“Alright now, I’ve . . . ”
Have you said everything you want to say for the week?
And they would break up and he said alright,
now I want you to go ahead one week and I want you –
and the doorbell’s ringing again and go to the door
and then I want you to sit down there and I’m your friend
and lets talk about what’s happened this week.
He just continued this process with her.
Now one may think when he brought her back to regular consciousness
into the present, she had the benefit of having had a childhood friend,
and he was that childhood friend.
Now the normal explanation in psychiatry and psychology for that experience
is that the past is recorded by means of representations we call memories.
And because the past is recorded by means of representations we call memories
when hypnosis goes on, this is what normal psychology and psychiatry believes.
When you are regressed, what you are doing is that you are tuning to
that fund of memories that are encoded in representations
and you are reconstructing the past from those representations.
I’ve been doing some explorations
and I’ve been doing some very unusual explorations.
And the explorations have come from my study of the Seth material .
And the explorations came as a result of a turn that occurred
that I presented last Wednesday night at the meditative sessions
in which I’ve been using auto suggestions before and we would say
“my right arm is limp and heavy ” and we would repeat that 6 or 7 times.
My left arm is limp and heavy, my right leg is limp and heavy.
That still tended to very thoroughly fasten our attention upon our body,
upon our physical nature and upon our physical processes.
Last Wednesday we began another type of exercise
and it was based upon two sessions I’d had earlier that day.
Just explorations.
Instead of my talking about limpness and heaviness of the physical form,
we started using the words conductive and receptive.
Now the words conductive and receptive were, the meaning of those words,
were interpreted in terms of the book The Unobstructed Universe
I’ve been studying by White, in which the obstructions of space and time
are replaced with the qualities of conductivity and receptivity respectively.
And this is the domain of dream reality in an unobstructed universe.
And when we begin thinking in terms of what is obstructed,
remember one of the things that is obstructed is time.
That is, space and time becomes a characteristic of obstructed reality
and what happens in regression is that you are bypassing that obstruction.
That is what the process does, and that’s what hypnosis is for.
As you bypass that obstructed reality, you say you are 5 years old
and I want you to just look inside of yourself right now
and see if you can trace or find within yourself whether indeed,
when I suggest to you that you can go back in time,
whether by saying you can go back in time, I’m not maintaining
and sustaining the obstruction in the physical reality.
But when I say you are 5 years old and it is your birthday,
you’re not actually bypassing the obstruction of time,
but not by means of connecting to representations of the past.
Many experimenters in the realm of psychiatry and psychology
have actually searched in the brain for engrams.
These engrams are supposedly these traces of experience
in which memory is deposited.
But what I’m suggesting this morning is
that when we take that process of conductivity and receptivity,
and we say you are 5 years old and it is your birthday,
then instead what has happened is you are eliminating the obstruction of time
and you are going through the simultaneous existence of all time.
And you are no longer limited to the path of experience that follows
and what’s happening is that you have the power to change the past.
And that’s exactly what Milton Erickson did.
The woman stood before him on that occasion as a person
that actually had a friend during her childhood
and she had explored the possibility of living that life without a friend
and on that occasion she really needed one
and she was bearing the consequences of not having one.
And so she went back and she changed the past.
She went through the perpendiculars to time.
She bypassed the obstructions of physical reality which include space and time
and she went to that place and that point.
That means that we do not have memories in the form of representations.
What we have are connections, to the simultaneous existence of our whole lives
and even that period before our lives.
Now instead of claiming that, instead of asserting it, instead of teaching
that as some doctrine, I think what we have to do is explore that.
And in order to explore that, we have to realize the power that it has.
Now, Seth tells us that the cells are precognitive,
the cells are thusly by being precognitive, are actually containing
and acknowledging connection to the future which exists
in the simultaneous present point of power and that I’m suggesting that dejavu,
I’m suggesting that precognitive dreams, I’m suggesting that healing processes
all have to do with changing the past, the changing the future.
Reading from Dreams and Projections of Consciousness:
“Dreams cannot only eliminate symptoms or completely alter moods,
but they can give us warning of incipient health deficiencies or difficulties.
One night in the early days of our psychic experience . . . ” –
this is Jane Roberts speaking – “I dreamed I saw Rob standing by the kitchen sink.
He buckled over and fell to the floor.
The dream frightened me so much that when I awakened, I caught myself
saying that dream scares me and I don’t want to remember it.
In other words, I found myself in the act of trying to censor the dream.
This alone told me it must be important, so I forced myself to write it down at once.
I didn’t even tell Rob the dream.
Three days later, Rob walked in to the bathroom, suddenly blacked out
by the bathroom sink and fell down unconscious to the floor.
If I had heeded the dream and told Rob, could the incident have been prevented?
Had I told Rob, I think that dream therapy or in a light trance state,
he could have discovered the reason behind the symptoms
and saved himself a difficult time.
The inner self does know the state of our health.
At one time I had some symptoms for which I was using
a combination of healing methods: suggestion, self analysis and dream therapy.
I seemed to be improving, but one didn’t ……
One night I requested a dream that would let me know my state of progress.
That night I dreamed that I was being examined by a doctor I know.
He told me that the difficulty was just about cleared up.
In this case, of course, I apparently used an authoritative figure
to impress my conscious mind.”
“Not all dreams of ill health should be taken literally.
Often they are symbolic interpretations of your state of mind.
You can request another dream that will make clear to you the symbols
in the first one.
In session 173 Seth said:
‘As the personality is changed by any action, so it is changed by its own dreams.
As it is moulded by the exterior environment, so it is molded
by the dreams that it creates and which help form its interior world.
And to the whole self, there is little differentiation made
between exterior and interior actions.
The ego makes such distinctions.
The core of the personality does not.
As an individual changes his physical situation, the reacting to it,
he changes his interior or psychic situation in the same way.
‘In dreams you give freedom to actions that cannot adequately be expressed
within the confines of normal waking reality.
If the personality handles his dream activities capably,
then problem actions find release in dreams.
When the ego is too rigid, it will even attempt to censor dreams.
However, freedom of action is not entirely permitted, even in the dream condition.
If this solution fails, the impeding action will then materialize
as a physical illness, or undesirable psychological condition.
‘If an individual has strong feelings of dependency
that cannot be expressed in daily life, he will express these in dreams.
If he does not, then he may develop an illness that allows him
to be dependent on physical life.
If he is aware of difficulties, however, he may request dreams
that will release this feeling.
The individual would not necessarily remember such a dream.
Psychologically, however, such an experience would be valid,
and the dependency expressed.
I cannot stress this too strongly.
‘To the inner self, the dream experience is as real as any other experience.
It follows that by using suggestion, various problems can be solved
within the dream state.
The inner ego of which we have spoken is the director of such unifying activities.
‘The Body self: it is the I of your dreams, having somewhat the same position
within the inner self as the ego has to the outer physical body.
Upon proper suggestion, the personality then will work out specific problems
in the dream state, but if the solution is not clear to the conscious ego,
this does not necessarily mean that the solution was not found.
There will be cases where it is not only unnecessary, but undesirable,
that the ego be familiar with the solution.
Suggestions will be followed by the sleeping self, in its own fashion.
The solutions may not appear to the conscious self in the way it expects.
The conscious self may not even recognize it has been given a solution
and yet it may act upon it.
‘Both psychological and physical illnesses
can largely be avoided through dream therapy.
Rather harmlessly, aggressive tendencies could also be given freedom
in the dream condition.
Through such therapy, actions would be allowed greater spontaneity.
In the case of the release of aggressiveness, the individual involved
would experience this within the dream state and hurt no one.
Suggestions could also be given so that he learned to understand the aggressiveness
in watching himself in the dream state.
This is not as far fetched as it might seem.
Much erratic, antisocial behaviour could be avoided in this way.
Crimes could be prevented.
The desire of….. actions would not build up to explosive pressure,
finally indulge in a fantasy.
‘Theoretically, you can imagine a massive experiment in dream therapy
where wars were fought by sleeping and not waking nations.
In practice however, there are many considerations to be understood,
if aggressiveness is the problem, for example,
then the preliminary suggestion should include a statement that in the dream,
the aggression will be harmlessly acted out and not directed
against a particular individual.
The subconscious is quite capable of handling the situation in this manner.
This may seem like a double censor, but in all cases,
it is the aggressiveness itself that is important,
and not the person or persons against whom the individual may decide
to vent his aggressiveness.
‘When the aggressiveness is released through the dream,
there will be no need for a victim.
We do not want an individual to suggest a dream situation
in which he is attacking another person.
There are several reasons for this.
Both telepathic realities which you do not yet understand
and guide patterns which would be unavoidable.
‘We are not attempting to substitute dream action for physical action,
generally speaking.
Here we are speaking of potentially dangerous situations
in which an individual shows signs of being unable to cope
with these psychological actions through ordinary methods of adaptation.
No one can deny that a war fought by dreaming men at specified times
would be less harmful than a physical war.
‘To return to my flight of fantasy, there would be repercussions however,
that would be unavoidable, for again basically, the personality does not differentiate
between sleeping and waking events.
Again, if the personality is fairly well balanced, his existence in dream reality
will reinforce his physical existence.
We are involved in a juggling of realities.
It is necessary to see the personality as it exists within both.'”
If you are interested in understanding this whole experience . . .
so in a sense, what we can do is use the dream reality in which to create.
Let’s allow ourselves to relax very, very deeply.
Not in the same way we have done so before.
There is no difference between the dream reality
and physical reality for the body self.
And I know Seth was using different terms in this book
than he began to use 20 years later.
So we can use those terms he developed as understanding for later.
Now, we can understand the physical self as the ego.
It is the part of us that is attached to this physical reality
and this physical reality has a function.
But the dream reality also has a function and this physical reality
can change the nature of this function.
And we have to realize that the physical reality is obstructed.
Notice B.C. this morning, when he was going up and down the stairs.
He had no sense of any possibility of being hurt
and was quite surprised when he was.
He had no hesitancy to step forward and down the step.
He depended upon us to assist him in this obstructed reality.
Because the reality with which he is familiar
before entering this physical life in this obstructed reality,
is a reality in which there is no possibility of being hurt.
And so there is this danger of this physical reality.
That danger of beginning to accumulate such a belief in possibilities of being hurt
by means of the obstructions that we develop patterns of fear.
Fear that he doesn’t have and fear that we would want to minimize.
We want that fear to be very carefully constructed.
So, if we decide that we are going to connect, not to the representations of the past
as the form or mechanism of memory, but instead to the matrix of life,
that simultaneous future and past that is not locked to us
by the obstructions of space and time.
We penetrate those obstructions by our orientation in conductivity and receptivity.
And as we found last Wednesday, we found two words
that helped us understand the nature of this conductivity and receptivity.
We called it flowing and yielding.
So we begin not to speak of our right arm, our left arm,
because we do not want to define who and what we are in only physical terms.
So we can begin a pattern where we connect to that body self
in a dream like structure, and we talk about flowing and yielding.
In order to move, we must change, in order to change, we must move.
So there is a changing, moving process.
This changing, moving exploration , this changing moving process
does not limit us to a physical reality, but the moving can occur
in a trans-temporal way, in a trans-spatial way, and we can go back to that time
when we understood and we knew that the universe is safe.
We are the projection of the consciousness meant for certain explorations
and we can act by this flowing and yielding, creating this conductivity
and receptivity, and while the body breathes, the consciousness reaches
with flowing and yielding, flowing and yielding, conductivity and receptivity.
And we let the body self-nominate.
The body self: what is it that most needs our attention?
What disbalance, what discontinuity do we need to touch?
And we are able through the mobilities of consciousness to reach
and touch that point of disbalance, that discontinuity
and we are able to use the larger scheme of our greater nature
and we’re able to touch in the perpendicular to time
through the limitations of space.
But with conductivity and receptivity
we can connect and we can gain that degree and kind of wholeness and oneness.
That healing and that soothing.
We are like B.C., in a safe universe and we change the past
and transform it into a past with which we have contentment.
And whatever part of that past most needs change, we touch first.
The obstructions of the physical reality are obstructions
towards which we have a dimming and numbing.
The power and mobility of the mind to touch and hold consciousness
with any part of the future or any part of the past increases with every breath.
We rally, we gather, we concentrate the connections of consciousness.
We find that greatest point of disbalance and / or discontinuity
and we bring this clear, sharp presence there on this disbalance
and we change the past.
We change the past by means of the qualities of contentment that transform it.
We change the future by means of the qualities of hope that fill it.
And we dream shape this work of contentment and this work of hope.
We are content. We have touched and healed and soothed.
This world needs the power, the care, the concern that we can bring to bear
in our dream work.
The matrix we call life, co-exists in every part of the sequence
of what we call a lifetime and is a path of encounter with that matrix.
It is a line along which we move for the sake of specialized focus
on the sequence of events we call a lifetime.
But ……….
Now we move with a power that allows us to touch easily
any part in that past and make of that part a source of contentment,
when to touch in the future and make of that part with a future, a source of hope.
When you have progressed any point of disbalance or discontinuity,
when you’ve produced soothing, healing, making one,
the accomplishment of the oneness and unity of your life,
move on to the next level and kind of disbalance
and provide that healing and soothing there.
Dreaming follows from conductivity.
Conductivity follows from mobility of the consciousness.
Mobility of the consciousness comes when we say I AM
and we do not have interference from the physical self. I AM.
I am innocent, and we change the past and gain contentment.
I am successful and we change the future and gain hope.
Only if we insist on censorship of the physical self do we forfeit receptivity,
susceptibility, the mobility that allows us to connect.
So we transcend space and we transcend time.
We overcome the obstructions of physical reality and we dream-connect.
We dream-connect to produce a deep soothing and healing, making one
and making whole, gaining and obtaining the integrity
of being from our dream connecting.
And we are agile and we are able and we are strong and we touch
and bless this world and we change the past and we change the future.
And we become more and more capable creators acting in behalf of the very one
in whom we live and move and have our being.
It is the whole-I (holy) that is the integrity of wholeness.
It is overcoming the dividing that comes from obstruction.
I love, I understand, I admire, I appreciate, I enjoy, I am safe, I am content,
I am hopeful.
We are one another’s anchorage, strength.
We receive and accept the indwelling Christ.
I live and I support life.
And the obstructions that seem to have been another version of life
made us short of energy, because we took recourse to the tactical methods
of physical reality, and its obstructions in space and time no longer restrain us.
We have no deficiency in energy. We have no deficiency in pattern.
For we can reach and touch and connect and gain that pattern by our receptivity
and our conductivity, by our flowing and yielding, by our changing and moving.
Whatever the phrase is that grants that connection and wholeness –
flowing and yielding, flowing and yielding, flowing and yielding,
flowing and yielding – let the image of your being, being released
to its flowing and its yielding.
I AM conductive and receptive about the image of your being,
be transformed by the conductivity and receptivity.
The conductivity and receptivity allows you to touch
and connect any point of disbalance that was explored
in the contemplations of obstructed reality.
And we transform every frustration into contentment.
And we no longer need to preserve a blind, an alienated and isolated self,
a self obstructed by its oversubscription to the boundaries,
the limits of the physical world, the physical self.
But we merge and connect and touch and enjoy the freedoms of the body self
and the dream images of the inner self and its wholeness and oneness
with All That Is, the omniscience and omnipresence,
the omnipotence of all that is and our participation in it.
The only borders, the only boundaries, the only walls we have ever experienced
are transformed from walls to doors, from closed doors to open doors,
from locked doors to unlocked doors because we have the key.
We have the keys when Jesus says
“To he that hath much even more shall be given”.
And we have the contentment with which we fill ourselves
when we view ourselves as being able to open any door that produced obstruction
and allow ourselves contentment with a changed past.
We have the keys that allow us to open any door that grants us contentment
with a past and hope for the future.
We are unobstructed.
Walls become doors, locked doors are unlocked,
closed doors are open doors,
and we dream-connect to create contentment and hope now.
Through these keys, it dissolves the boundaries of the physical self
and the adaptations of the obstructed reality.
We use these keys to dream connect and produce the wholeness,
the integrity of spirit, the oneness, the oneness that is not only
the acknowledgment of every part of who and what we are,
by every other part of who and what we are,
but that oneness that connects what seems to be a separated self from all others.
And we gain the anchorage of all nearness and of love of one another,
dissolving every obstruction and transforming it.
The walls become doors, the locked doors are unlocked,
the closed doors are open and finally even the shadow of a door
that separates a past, that has the power to obstruct
and even the shadow is dissolved.
And we find a safeness of an open universe, the contentment.
What a flow of refreshing, what a release of energy,
what a deep ease and relaxation.
The whole of the soul is found through abolishing the idolatry
of regarding memory as a representation of the past.
Idolatry is banished by releasing our attention from a regard,
from a substitution of a relationship with a representation
for a relationship with reality.
This is the power, this is the key.
Deep and complete ease and relaxation.
Deep breath, refreshed, and greetings to our wee friend – B.C.
