Sierra Exif JPEGEthnic violence which has claimed over 400 lives and displaced thousands of people in Kenya has been condemned by the United Nations.

The latest attack is reported to have occurred at dawn on Thursday on a village in the Tana River Delta in which at least 10 people, including five children, were killed.

Many people were injured in what has been described as a revenge attack in south-eastern Kenya.

UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky says the Office of the UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Kenya has conveyed its condolences to the Kenyan government and the families affected by the violence.

“The Office of the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Kenya joined with other humanitarian and development partners in condemning these inhumane acts which have, since the beginning of 2012, claimed the lives of more than 450 people, including women and children, and displaced nearly 112,000 people. The Office also expressed its continued willingness to provide additional assistance in support of the Government and other humanitarian actors on the ground.”

Nesirky says that in the run-up to the March 2013 elections, the United Nations is urging Kenyans to exercise their democratic rights in a peaceful manner with respect for the rights and dignity of everyone.
