Labor exploitation is the main cause of human trafficking, according to a new report by the International Organization for Migration, (IOM).
The report which looked into human trafficking trends showed that half of the human trafficking cases brought before the IOM for assistance in 2011 involved victims of labor exploitation.
Spokesperson for the IOM Jumbe Omari Jumbe says the report, which collected information from more than 150 IOM missions showed that during the period, IOM provided assistance to more than 3-thousand victims of labour exploitation, which he says represented 33 per cent of all recorded instances of assistance sought by victims of human trafficking.
“Since 2010, labour trafficking had overtaken sexual exploitation as the main type of trafficking seen in cases assisted by IOM. Although this is our first report, we are not late really. The world is still oblivious and not aware of the magnitude of this tragedy of human trafficking.”
A new report will be issued in June this year for 2012.
