Join for the morning kick-off, a celebration of International Literacy Day as well as the unveiling of the All Children Reading Grand Challenge Innovations! Opened by Rajiv Shah, with messages from Laura Bush, Andrew Mitchell, Hugh Jackman, Elmo, and others with the announcement of the 2012 All Children Reading Grand Challenge Innovation Results by Kent Hill and Chris Tinning, including a reminder of the power of the individual by Linda Madden and the power of partnership by Esther Brimmer.

Hear from education ministry officials at the country level from Rwanda and Egypt, where they will describe what is happening in their country on early grade reading and how they are taking their programs to scale. We will also hear from a well-known international development economist who will speak about the global learning crisis and why children are not learning in school.

Deep Dive Breakout #1: Supporting Children’s Reading beyond School Walls: How community interventions have been shown to support improved reading in projects in Africa and Asia.Community-based interventions can support and strengthen the reading skills children are learning in the classroom. Using recent research and data analyses from reading interventions such as Pratham’s Read India and Save the Children’s Literacy Boost, this session will examine the impact of getting children to enjoy reading outside of school time through parent and community support focused on children’s learning.

Mobiles for Reading is one of the signature activities of the All Children Reading Grand Challenge for Development and mEducation Alliance designed to explore, highlight and evaluate initiatives exploring the use of mobile technologies, broadly defined to support early grade reading efforts, particularly in developing countries.This break-out session will be highly interactive and participatory allowing participants to have first-hand exposure to initiatives, technologies, and practitioners exploring the use of technologies to advance early grade reading outcomes in developing countries. Participants will also have the opportunity to sign-up for and provide inputs for future activities of this working group.

Finish the day with a reception hosted by GPE allowing technical experts, Grand challenge innovators, VIP’s, and attendees to network and celebrate International Literacy Day.
