WOMAN of ACTION
Jen Frankel
“When I was young, I wanted to be David Bowie. I know the “baby book” my mother kept goes from teacher to ballerina to actress, but as soon as I knew you could be an individual rather than an occupation, there was no going back. But it was Bowie not Madonna, Picasso instead of Kahlo, Dickens never Wolfe. Men’s art was about the art; women’s was about the struggle to be recognized as an artist. I didn’t want to have to fight that battle.
‘I just wanted to BE, to DO, and above all, to CREATE‘.
My childhood ended early because, even at 8 or 9 I realized that despite my desires, every act would be a struggle. My family treated my passion with incomprehension, and responded to my deep pain with the advice to stop thinking so much, and that I would be happy if I accepted that I was “ordinary.” I embarked on a lifetime of depression.
How could I remain myself when I found no reflection of who I was in what I saw around me?
How, when I was constantly told that my only choice was to be something other than myself?
How could I find my path when there was no role model to follow, no mentor to ease my fears, no voice to tell me it was okay to be myself?
Somehow, despite the crippling exhaustion, headaches, anhedonia (an inability to experience any form of pleasure), and intense feeling of alienation, I never stopped. I kept writing, and drawing, and recording music. I never stopped putting myself on stage or into new and potentially frightening situations. Through the darkness of 25 years of deepening clinical depression, the thing that was me found like hell.
I felt like I’d never caught a single break in life until I moved to Toronto and, exhausted, barely able to leave the apartment despite just having finished a one-woman show at the Fringe, I entered a drug study program at Sunnybrook Hospital. There at last, I was able to find help and validation. There is pressure on us to believe that it is up to us to solve our own problems. But the truth is that sometimes, the help you need can only come from outside.
‘There should be no shame in this. Humans are social animals. We need one another. I needed to be diagnosed, validated, treated, and above all, SEEN.’
Despite my depression and the feeling that I was always going it alone, I’ve accomplished much, and it’s just the beginning. I believe in the power of creation over the easy road of destruction. I believe in the power of storytelling to unite us across cultures, ages, and across the gender divide.
And most of all, I believe that it is up to women to lead by becoming everything they are capable of, to provide both women and men with role models. I take my own responsibilities very seriously, both to do what I can with my own talents and to make the world a better place in whatever way I can.”
