WOMAN of ACTION

Louise Hay

Her own personal philosophy was forged from her tormented upbringing. Her childhood was unstable and impoverished, and her teen years were marked by abuse. Hay recounted her life story in an interview with Mark Oppenheimer of the New York Times in May 2008.

In it Hay stated that she was born in Los Angeles to a poor mother who remarried Louise’s violent stepfather. She recounted that when she was about 5, she was raped by a neighbor. At 15 she dropped out of high school without a diploma, became pregnant and, on her 16th birthday, gave up her newborn baby girl to be adopted. She then recalled she moved to Chicago, where she worked in low paying jobs.

In 1950 she moved on again to New York. She explained, that at this point she changed her name and began a career as a fashion model. She was successful at this, working for Bill Blass, Oleg Cassini and Pauline Trigère. In 1954 she married the English businessman Andrew Hay, but went on to tell how, after 14 years of marriage, she was devastated when he left her for another woman.

Louise ran away from home and ended up in New York City, where she became a model and married a prosperous businessman. Although it appeared that her life had turned around, it was not until the marriage ended 14 years later, that her healing really began.

HEAL YOUR BODY

Her first book, Heal Your Body, was published in 1976, long before it was fashionable to discuss the connection between the mind and body. Revised and expanded in 1988, this best-selling book introduced Louise’s concepts to people in 33 different countries and has been translated into 25 languages throughout the world.

By Hay’s account in the early 1970s she became a Religious Science practitioner. In this role she led people in spoken affirmations, which she believes will cure their illnesses, and became popular as a workshop leader. She also recalled how she had studied Transcendental Meditation with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi at the Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa.

Hay said that about this time she found the First Church of Religious
Science
on 48th Street, that taught her the transformative power of thought. Hay revealed that here she studied the New Thought works of authors like Florence Scovel Shinn, who claimed that positive thinking could change people’s material circumstances, and the Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes, who taught that the body could be healed through positive thinking.

Ernest Holmes Self Development Quotes

Life is a mirror and will reflect back to the thinker what he thinks into it.

The most destructive force you and I have – and the most constructive – is our own unconscious emotional and thinking and feeling state.

This is the only obsession and the only devils there are. We are the obsessing entity, and we are the only devil we will ever meet.

Prepare your mind to receive the best that life has to offer.

To feel that we suffer for our mistakes is justice, but to feel that our mistakes are eternal is to be already in the suppositional hell of a false theology.

The intellect is a cold thing and a merely intellectual idea will never stimulate thought in the same manner that a spiritual idea does.

There was a time when a man was so convinced that the world was round that he was determined to prove it.

RECENTLY DUBBEDthe closest thing to a living saint” by the Australian media, Louise L. Hay is known as one of the Founders of the Self-help Movement.

Through Louise’s healing techniques and positive philosophy, millions have learned how to create more of what they want in their lives, including more wellness in their bodies, minds, and spirits. Her own personal philosophy was forged from her tormented upbringing.

Louise started what would become her life’s work in New York City in 1970. She attended meetings at the Church of Religious Science and began training in the ministerial program. She became a popular speaker at the church, and soon found herself counseling clients. This work quickly blossomed into a full-time career.

After several years, Louise compiled a reference guide detailing the mental causes of physical ailments, and developed positive thought patterns for reversing illness and creating health. This compilation was the basis for Heal Your Body, also known affectionately as “the little blue book.” She began traveling throughout the United States, lecturing and facilitating workshops on loving ourselves and healing our lives.

Hay described how in 1977 or 1978 she found she had cervical cancer, and how she came to the conclusion that by holding on to her resentment for her childhood abuse and rape she had contributed to its onset. She reported how she had refused conventional medical treatment, and began a regime of forgiveness, coupled with therapy, nutrition, reflexology and occasional enemas. She claimed in the interview that she rid herself of the cancer by this method, but declared that there is no doctor left alive who can confirm this story, while swearing to its truth.

Louise was able to put her philosophies into practice when she was diagnosed with cancer. She considered the alternatives to surgery and drugs, and instead developed an intensive program of affirmations, visualization, nutritional cleansing, and psychotherapy.

Within six months, she was completely healed of cancer.

You Can Heal Your Life reached the New York Times bestseller list and remained on it for 13 consecutive weeks. More than 35 million copies of You Can Heal Your Life have been sold throughout the world.

In 1976, Hay wrote her first book Heal Your Body, which began as a small pamphlet, containing a list of different bodily ailments and their “probable” metaphysical causes. This pamphlet was later enlarged and extended into her book You Can Heal Your Life, published in 1984. As of February 2008, it was second on the New York Times miscellaneous paperback best sellers list.

In 1980, Louise moved back to her native Southern California, and it was here that she began putting her workshop methods on paper.

In 1984, her new book, You Can Heal Your Life was published. In it, Louise explains how our beliefs and ideas about ourselves are often the cause of our emotional problems and physical maladies and how, by using certain tools, we can change our thinking and our lives for the better.

In 1985, Louise began her famous support group, “The Hayride,” with six men diagnosed with AIDS. Some people believe AIDS is not caused by negative thinking. These individuals, during the AIDS crisis, were not pleased with Hay’s message that it was, in fact, caused by negative thinking.By 1988, the group had grown to a weekly gathering of 800 people and had moved to an auditorium in West Hollywood.

A Quote from the Hayride Founder, Louise L. Hay

“I have been watching Stuart’s work for some time and I am impressed with his integrity, his knowledge and his enormous heart. It is his heart that enables him to do his work with such compassion and understanding. From rebirthing, to running The Los Angeles Center For Living, to courageously going to Russia to help fight AIDS there, he is first class all the way. You are all in good hands.”

It was during this time that she wrote The AIDS Book: Creating a Positive Approach, based on her experiences with this powerful group.  Once again, Louise had started a movement of love and support long before people began to wear red ribbons in their lapels.     ~  Brava Louise !!!

Louise now heads Hay House, a successful publishing company.

What began as a small venture in the living room of her home, has turned into a prosperous corporation that has sold millions of books and tapes worldwide. Hay House authors include many notables in the self-help movement, including Wayne Dyer, Joan Borysenko, and Doreen Virtue, among others.

FOUNDATION: http://www.hayfoundation.org/

In addition, The Hay Foundation and the Louise L. Hay Charitable Fund are two non-profit organizations established by Louise that support many diverse organizations, including those dealing with AIDS, battered women, and other challenged individuals in our society.

Around the same time she began leading support groups for people living with H.I.V. or AIDS which she called “Hay Rides“. These grew from a few people in her living room to hundreds of men in a large hall in West Hollywood. Her work with AIDS patients drew fame and she was invited to appear on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” and “Donahue” in the same week, in March 1988.

Following this, You Can Heal Your Life immediately landed on the New York Times best-seller list. More than 35 million copies are now in print around the world in over 30 languages and it also has been made into a movie. You Can Heal Your Life is also included in the book 50 Self-Help Classics for being significant in its field. Some of these statistics are open to question however. Louise Hays writes on page 225 of her book (December 2000 printing) that the book has “. . . sold more than three million copies”. Given this disparity, it is more likely that the 35 million copies named in the subsequent 2007 and 2008 newspaper interviews should be 3.5 million.

Louise says,

“The moment of power is always in the present”.

At 81, Louise is proud to release her first-ever film on her life and work You Can Heal Your Life: The Movie.
