Weekly Women’s Update: Women’s Equality Day 2011‏

On March 11, 2009, President Obama signed an Executive Order creating the White House Council on Women and Girls. In his remarks at the signing, the President underscored that the purpose of the Council is “to ensure that each of the agencies in which they’re charged takes into account the needs of women and girls in the policies they draft, the programs they create, the legislation they support” and that the true purpose of our government is “to ensure that in America, all things are still possible for all people.”

Weekly Women’s Update

Thanks to the determined women who came before us, we are pleased to celebrate Women’s Equality Day 2011. President Obama has issued a proclamation in honor of the day, which commemorates the 1920 passage of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote. Thanks to the efforts of Rep. Bella Abzug, the U.S. Congress marked the 26th day of August as “Women’s Equality Day” in 1971.

As the President outlines in his proclamation, “For the women who fought for this right, voting was not the end of the journey for equality, but the beginning of a new era in the advancement of our Union. These brave and tenacious women challenged our Nation to live up to its founding principles, and their legacy inspires us to reach ever higher in our pursuit of liberty and equality for all.”

The President and the First Lady are deeply committed to ensuring all women and girls can reach their highest potential, but each of us has a role to play in this fight for equality.  So in honor of Women’s Equality Day I hope you will get involved in our efforts by:

  • Learning more about Let’s Move!, and what you and your community can do battling childhood obesity.
  • Finding ways to give back to our courageous service members, veterans and their families, and getting involved with Joining Forces.
  • Visiting the Council on Women and Girls web site and staying connected with our efforts.

Women of our World,
