During his speech, Ambassador Hakimi highlighted how important the hard work of the US-Afghan Women’s Council and all of their supporters is to the people of Afghanistan. He also made points about the correlation between the quality of life for Afghan women and the political situation in the country: “The protection and promotion of women’s rights is a top priority in our democratic process.”

He continued that, “the brave women of Afghanistan have a critical role to play.”

In this manner, it is clear that the advancements in women’s rights in Afghanistan must be Afghan-led. Ambassador Hakimi added “We are truly appreciative of the international support the resilient women of our country have come a long way and are hopeful about the future of Afghanistan as a country where both men and women prosper and enjoy the security and opportunities of a peaceful life.”

The Ambassador concluded his remarks that Afghanistan today, is a reflection of tremendous changes in the lives of Afghan people. This change is especially noted in the lives of Afghan Women, who have greatly suffered during the years of deprivation under the Taliban. He looks forward to participating in events such as these that celebrate joint achievements and the realization of common goals.
