On July 13, 2011 Ambassador Hakimi was joined by Ambassador Mark Grossman, Ambassador Melanne Verveer, distinguished members of the US-Afghan Women’s Council, and the White House Council on Women and Girls in celebrating the achievements of Afghan women over the past year and envisioning new ways to help them prosper. The successful event was hosted in the White House by the US-Afghan Women’s Council.

The US-Afghan Women’s Council is a public-private partnership that provides support for Afghan Women in the areas of health, education, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Since its establishment in 2002, the organization continues to bring together leaders and innovators in government, the private sector, and philanthropy in order to provide support for Afghan women.

During his speech, Ambassador Hakimi highlighted how important the hard work of the US-Afghan Women’s Council and all of their supporters is to the people of Afghanistan. He also made points about the correlation between the quality of life for Afghan women and the political situation in the country: “The protection and promotion of women’s rights is a top priority in our democratic process.”

He continued that, “the brave women of Afghanistan have a critical role to play.”

In this manner, it is clear that the advancements in women’s rights in Afghanistan must be Afghan-led. Ambassador Hakimi added “We are truly appreciative of the international support the resilient women of our country have come a long way and are hopeful about the future of Afghanistan as a country where both men and women prosper and enjoy the security and opportunities of a peaceful life.”

The Ambassador concluded his remarks that Afghanistan today, is a reflection of tremendous changes in the lives of Afghan people. This change is especially noted in the lives of Afghan Women, who have greatly suffered during the years of deprivation under the Taliban. He looks forward to participating in events such as these that celebrate joint achievements and the realization of common goals.
