Dear Friends, Take Action !A triple disaster is unfolding for children in the Horn of Africa.A deadly combination of drought, on-going conflict and escalating food prices has placed over 11 million people in need of life-saving aid in Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.Close to 2.5 million of those at risk are children under the age of five. This is the worst drought to hit the region in 60 years.
Earlier this week, the United Nations declared that famine exists in two regions of southern Somalia. Across the country, nearly half of the Somali population – 3.7 million people – are now in crisis.
But these circumstances are anything but normal.
UNICEF has launched an urgent appeal for this unfolding emergency, with a goal of raising US$ 100 million to urgently reach these vulnerable children with:
- Therapeutic food to give malnourished children a chance at survival
- Protection for children whom the crisis has made much more vulnerable to violence and abuse
- Safe, clean water to help prevent the outbreak of disease
Thousands of families are crossing the border from Somalia to refugee camps in Ethiopia and Kenya – camps that are already completely overwhelmed due to years of conflict.
Children are in danger. This crisis has left them malnourished, weak and easily vulnerable to the spread of killer diseases like diarrhea – a condition easily treated under normal circumstances.
Please join us in helping children and families in the Horn of Africa. Please donate now to help UNICEF provide urgently needed aid and protection to children affected by this emergency.
Thank you for your support,
