Films Celebrating Women’s Rights Featured on International Women’s Day

A series of films called Why Women Count is being featured on a tve YouTube channel in commemoration of the hundredth anniversary of International Women’s Day. Since 1997 tve has been producing and distributing films that reflect the struggles, and triumphs, of groups around the world fighting for equal rights.

 

UNFPA has supported tve in the production of a number of these films, including:

• Trawler Girl – Johanna Kwedhi, Namibia’s first women trawler captain
• No Country for Young Girls – Vaijanti Devi’s search for gender equality in India
• Three Sisters – Three girls in remote rural wilderness of Eritrea stand up for their rights
• Grace Under Fire – Chadian obstetrician Dr Grace Kodindo visits the Democratic Republic of Congo to talk to rape survivors
• Sorie K and the MDGs – Blind musician Sorie K goes on a road trip to find out why Sierra Leone isn’t meeting its promise to educate or protect young girls
• Mafarana Gogos – How football is empowering South Africa’s‘football grannies’ in Limpopo Province
• Scent of the Street – How the ‘Area Girls’ of one tough neighbourhood in Lagos, Nigeria, are transforming their lives

Together the films reveal that despite remarkable progress over the last century, the promise of equality remains unfulfilled.
