Prime Minister Stephen Harper today issued the following statement after Enda Kenny was appointed the new Prime Minister of Ireland (Taoiseach):

“On behalf of our Government,

I am pleased to offer my sincere and heartfelt congratulations to Enda Kenny on his appointment as Prime Minister of Ireland (Taoiseach).

“Our two countries enjoy close relations based on family ties ─ millions of Canadians claim some Irish ancestry ─ cultural affinities, and shared democratic political traditions. I look forward to working with the new Government of Ireland on strengthening the bonds between our two nations and on addressing the pressing global challenges of the day.

“I would also like to congratulate all incoming Members of Parliament on their election victories.”
