Best Actress
Nominees:
Jennifer Lawrence in Winter’s Bone
Annette Benning in The Kids Are All Right
Helen Mirren in The Tempest
Carey Mulligan in Never Let Me Go
Natalie Portman in Black SwanWinner: Portman. Carey Mulligan was a front runner in 2010 with her role in An Education and she will again this year, but Never Let Me Go may have to lean on supporting categories while Natalie Portman rises to the top as the ballerina on the brink of nervous breakdown in Black Swan. Previously nominated for Closer, Portman’s the kind of actress the Academy can’t wait to hand a statue – she’s beautiful, she’s talented and she’s watchable.
The dark horse is Annette Benning, who will take pride enough in boxing out Hilary Swank from the top five.
Close Calls: Amy Ryan in Jack Goes Boating, Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit, Hilary Swank in Conviction.
