Loyalty to Your Soul
Listen with Heart
by H. Ronald Hulnick, Ph.D., and
Mary R. Hulnick, Ph.D.
“Bookstore shelves are filled with guides telling us how to get our bodies in shape, but there is very little practical advice about exercising our souls. Loyalty to Your Soul tears down the false wall we’ve put up between our minds and our spirits, and shows the way toward a more fulfilling life.”—Arianna Huffington, the cofounder and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post
If you’re wondering how a simple listening skill might change lives, we’d like to share the following account. A seven-woman contingent of University of Santa Monica graduates facilitated a workshop that was part of the United Nations’ Partnership for Peace Program. This event included approximately 50 Israeli and 50 Palestinian professional women.
Due to political tensions, the conference could not be held in either Israel or Palestine, and so these courageous women made their way to neutral Jordan for three days to explore specific initiatives that aimed to improve the environment for building peace by encouraging dialogue and promoting understanding.
The workshop consisted largely of three-person processes during which one person was the Listener, one was the Sharer, and the third served as what we call a Neutral Observer. The Sharer was invited to speak about something personally meaningful and relevant to the intention of the conference. The Listener was not to comment on what the Sharer said, but rather to simply practice the skill the trio was seeking to learn, which, in this case, was Heart-Centered Listening. The Neutral Observer’s task was to silently hold a safe and accepting space for both Sharer and Listener, and then to provide constructive feedback to both of them regarding their effectiveness in practicing the skill.
On the second day of the workshop, the women began to trickle in. I noticed as the two most influential women in the workshop, one Palestinian and one Israeli, both whom happened to be psychiatrists, arrived. I was asked to be their Neutral Observer. As the exercise began, I was a bit nervous about being with the Palestinian psychiatrist in particular. She was young, militant, angry, and appeared to be quite outspoken. During the previous day, she had stood to aggressively share her grievances. She came to express her position to the Israelis, and had not given an opening to move into any form of resolution of the issues.
The women were instructed on the exercise, and despite the structure of the process, immediately began debating. It was as if the two countries were airing their grievances and animosities rather than two women simply talking together. I interrupted several times, suggesting that they work with the skill of Heart-Centered Listening to see what might happen. I must have intervened four times, as their exchange was escalating. These were two highly educated, intelligent, and experienced women who were talking with great passion. You can imagine the fire that was moving through them.
Then the Israeli psychiatrist “got it.” She stopped reacting and began listening. It was remarkable. As she held the space for the Palestinian psychiatrist, they both began to relax and became more centered within themselves. I could sense their countries’ histories fall away as they began genuinely listening to each other, woman to woman. The authenticity of their exchange was deeply moving to witness.
During post-process large-group sharing, the Israeli psychiatrist shared with the group that she realized after all these years as a psychiatrist in private practice, working in hospitals, and teaching at a university, that she had never truly listened. I felt this was an incredible insight that demonstrated the power of a one-hour dialogue to begin transforming a lifelong pattern. She said she recognized that there were far deeper issues for the Palestinian people than she had previously understood or realized. That she felt safe enough to share it with the entire group was nothing short of miraculous.
Then the Palestinian psychiatrist stood to share her experience with the group. This time, she was considerably softer. She stood without the defiance and anger that had been her previous persona, and shared with tears in her eyes that this was the first time in her life that she had ever felt heard. She said, “I truly had a profound experience. I was listening with acceptance to an Israeli and hearing that her concerns are similar to mine. I was truly surprised.”
The two women experienced a deep connection with each other and chose to continue their dialogue during lunch. Clearly, they had fulfilled the UN’s hope of participants moving beyond a competition of lamentations rooted in ancient resentments and animosities into a dialogue where, at least for these women, peace truly prevailed. This experience was most inspirational for me. I remember it as if it happened yesterday, and I suspect I will remember it for the rest of my life. What an affirmation of the power of Heart-Centered Listening.

Along the Enlightening Path of Dr. David R. Hawkins
A doorway to heaven… …After serving in World War II, I worked my way through medical school, as I was fascinated by the complexities of the mind and wanted to study psychiatry. My training psychoanalyst was an agnostic like me—both of us took a dim view of religion. The analysis went well, as did my career, and I became quite successful.
However, I didn’t settle quietly in to professional life: I succumbed to a progressive and fatal illness that did not respond to any available treatment. By the time I was 38, I knew I was about to die. I didn’t care about my body, but my spirit was in a state of extreme anguish and despair. As my final moment approached, the thought flashed through my mind, What if there is a God? So I called out in prayer, If there is a God, I ask Him to help me now. I surrendered to whatever God there might be, and went unconscious. When I awoke, a transformation of such enormity had taken place that I was struck dumb with awe.
The person I had been no longer existed. There was no personal self or ego left—just an Infinite Presence of such unlimited power that it was all that was. This Presence had replaced what had been “me,” and the body and its actions were controlled solely by the Presence’s infinite will. The world was illuminated by the clarity of an Infinite Oneness, which expressed itself as all things revealed in their immeasurable beauty and perfection.
For nine months, this stillness persisted. I had no will of my own; unbidden, the physical entity went about its business under the direction of the infinitely powerful, but exquisitely gently, will of the Presence. In that state, there was no need to think about anything. All truth was self-evident; no conceptualization was necessary or even possible.
Everything and everyone in the world was luminous and exquisitely beautiful. All living things became radiant, and expressed this radiance in stillness and splendor. It was apparent that all of mankind is actually motivated by inner love, but has simply become unaware; most people live their lives as though they’re sleepers unawakened to the perception of who they really are. Everyone looked as if they were asleep, but they were incredibly beautiful—I was in love with everyone.
The miraculous happened, beyond ordinary comprehension. Many chronic maladies from which I had suffered for years disappeared; my eyesight spontaneously normalized, and I no longer needed the bifocals I had worn for much of my life.
As my limited, false self dissolved into the universal Self of its true origin, there was an ineffable sense of having returned home, a state of absolute peace and relief from all suffering. For it’s only the illusion of individuality that is the origin of all suffering—when one realizes that one is the universe, complete and at one with all that is, forever without end, then no further suffering is possible.
Each step along the way to enlightenment is exciting and rewarding when its essence is revealed. For each seeker, there are important key understandings that light the way and facilitate success. My new book Along the Path of Enlightenment is a collection of such truths. Although there are many doorways to heaven, each seeker must find his or her own route.
Since he was three years old, Sir David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D., felt a heightened awareness of life. In his lifelong quest to solve the paradox of existence, he discovered a path to enlightenment that is scientifically compelling to modern society. Known around the globe as an internationally renowned psychiatrist, consciousness researcher, spiritual lecturer, and mystic, Dr. Hawkins is the author of more than eight volumes, including the bestseller Power vs. Force. Now in his eighties, Dr. Hawkins continues to have a profound impact on humankind. His new book, Along the Path to Enlightenment
is a collection of 365 daily reflections that will help you on your journey toward spiritual truth. Click here to order your copy. For more about Dr. Hawkins and his work, click here.
Scott Jeffrey, who edited the material for this collection, is the author of numerous books. He is currently the authorized biographer for Dr. Hawkins.
Inside-Out Healing
The Power of Presence
by Richard Moss
Creating wellness moment by moment…One popular New Age premise tells you that “you create your own reality.” Sadly, this is often misunderstood to mean that when you are sick, you have somehow done this to yourself. Of course there are instances in which you bear more responsibility for your illness. Perhaps you made poor lifestyle choices in the past, such as smoking or excessive drinking or drug use. But setting aside these obvious examples, most of the time you really cannot know why you have become ill. Therefore, it is important not to add insult to injury by making yourself feel guilty.
The real truth of this premise is that you do create your own reality, but only right now, in this present moment. You do this through the stories that you are telling yourself and identifying with. You do not create the scenery you see, only your reaction to it. You do not create the weather, but calling a day “miserable” makes you unhappy. Understanding that you are responsible for your own psychological and emotional reality in the present moment has everything to do with awakening to the nature of your own mind and nothing to do with creating guilt.
If you tell yourself “I (somehow) have created my disease,” the immediate consequence of this belief is a feeling of shame and guilt, not increased well-being. Even if you had previously made unhealthy choices, blaming yourself for past actions does not improve your present state. The key then to maximizing your potential for healing is choosing to be fully present. In other words, let go of worrying about what caused your illness and instead enter completely into whatever your actual experience is, moment by moment.
There is a further consequence for believing that you have caused your illness: you will likely also believe that in order to find a remedy, you must first discover what you did to cause the problem. Now the pressure is on: not only do you feel guilty, but anxious as well. You are indeed creating your own reality—emotional stress—but only in this moment and only through your own thinking. Believing that you are the cause of your illness (which, by the way, makes you special) leads to much unnecessary suffering.
When you are in the Now, your mind stops thinking about you and about everything else, and you are simply aware. Time in a certain sense stops or slows down enough so that your sense of self is no longer that of someone on his or her way to somewhere else. You are just as you are. Your situation—or, more precisely, your state of being—is not something caused by something prior. You are not comparing your present circumstance to the past nor projecting into the future. You are no longer explaining, justifying, rationalizing, or interpreting your experience. Therefore, you are not attributing cause to what you are experiencing…you are just being. And in that being, you are always and already whole.
Richard Moss received his doctorate of medicine in 1972, but eventually left that career after a life-changing realization led him to his true calling: the exploration of consciousness and the integration of self-realization in daily life. “My journey from traditional doctor working in emergency and hospital medicine to scientist of the mind and heart was initiated on my 30th birthday with an experience that, for want of any better word, I will call awakening.” Little did Richard know that this would be the core of the work that would occupy the rest of his life. The author of six seminal books, Richard wrote his latest Inside-Out Healing because he felt a kinship with every person who suffers and because “I know that so much human misery is unnecessary and can be relieved with the proper understanding and tools.” To learn more about these tools in Inside-Out Healing and how you can apply them to your own life, click here. Why bad foods taste so good…It’s a hot summer day in Montvale, New Jersey, circa 1970. I am ten years old, sitting on a curb outside Coiffures by Gigi, the salon where my mother is getting her blond hair teased into a flip by Tom the hairdresser. The summer air is dense and muggy. Maple trees and weeping willows stand still in the stifling heat.
My ritual rarely varies. While my mother gets her hair done, I go to the nearby stationery store and buy a few Betty and Veronica comic books. Then I buy a five-pack of Slim Jims at the A&P supermarket. I sit on the curb outside the salon, open the red-and-yellow box, and take out the first stick. I open the comic book and begin to read, synchronizing bites with the words.
Bite. The outer skin pops as my teeth perforate the first layer. “Oh, Betty, you’re not wearing that?” says the mean-spirited Veronica. Chew. A wad of grease explodes in my mouth. “Veronica, you are such a bitch!”says Betty. She actually doesn’t say this, of course, but I wish she would. Veronica is a vain, petty tyrant, and I want Betty to knock her on her ass.
Bite. Greasy pulp again fills my mouth. “All the boys love me, Betty, me!” screams Veronica. I swallow. I wish Betty would slug Veronica, but instead she just looks crestfallen. “Buck up, girl!” I want to yell. I can’t bear to see her belittled by that shrew. I want her to learn to stand up for herself and to the bullies of the world. As I read on, I eat one Slim Jim after another, envisioning a different life for Betty.
As I do for me.
I know, even as I eat the entire box of Slim Jims, that this food is bad for me. But the combination of salt, fat, and sugar grabs me like metal to a magnet. As I chew the tough sticks, some of the anger, sadness, and bewilderment I feel about myself and my family abates.
I am lonely. I am convinced I was born into the wrong family. My father, when not being charming or sick, is a bully. He has, on various occasions, punished me by making me stand with my nose in the corner; washed my mouth out with Phisohex, an old-fashioned antibacterial soap; and hit me with a belt. I’m scared to be around him, which, it turns out, is a blessedly rare occurrence, since he travels six months a year on business. He loves me. I often feel his warmth. But his love is dangerous and inconsistent.
My mother loves me, too, but I don’t feel connected to her the way I want. As children often do, I want a mother who will mirror me. I want her to encourage my desire to write. I don’t feel seen by her for who I am inside.
I don’t know my place in the world and already know that my family cannot help me figure it out.
It’s been decades since I’ve eaten Slim Jims, and now that I’m writing about them, I wonder how they’ll taste and how I’ll feel eating them again.
I go to my local 7-Eleven store and buy a five-pack from the counter. I glance around to see if anyone’s watching. I quickly stuff the box into my purse. I feel like I’m buying porn.
I drive home and put the box on my desk. It sits there for days, until I finally decide it’s time.
I unwrap the vacuum-packed foil seal. The vinegar smell hits me first. Then I take a bite. Salt, grease—a sensory bomb—just like I remember.
My nine-year-old son Jack walks into my office and sees the box. “Can I have one?” he asks.
I’m torn. If I eat Slim Jims, that’s my choice. But give them to my son?
“Please?” he asks again.
I nod. For someone so young, he knows a lot about food. Since I never feed my kids food like this, part of me is curious to hear what he has to say.
I open one and hand it to him. He takes a bite. His eyes grow big.
“What do you think?” I ask.
He spews out a few words: “Oily. Greasy. Thick. Insanely salty. Chewy.”
Then he adds: “It makes all the other food in my stomach seem boring, and makes me want another one.”
He’s hit upon the magic formula for cheap, fast food. Grease, salt, and corn syrup, all thrown together to create a taste that makes you beg for more.
I want to see how it feels to eat them all, just like I used to. I eat a second, then a third, then a fourth.
Maybe it’s a coincidence, but that night, I get sick. My body can’t take it. I lie in bed, queasy, willing sleep to come.

Traveling at the Speed of Love
Now Available in Paperback
by Sonia ChoquetteWhen we travel at the speed of love, we choose to live in a frequency of unconditional love. Today, most of us travel at the frequency of fear and live with a victim consciousness. When we’re traveling at the fear frequency, no matter how fast we go, we can never get to our destination. The victim consciousness is based on the premise: “I have no choice.” Traveling at the speed of love means taking our power back.
We’re actually in a different universe when we travel at the speed of love. Our world is not a menacing, threatening race geared to cheat death. It becomes, at any moment, so satisfying that if this were our last moment on Earth, that would be okay.
This is not to say that change is easy. To travel at the speed of love might require a complete paradigm shift in the way you look at your everyday existence. In this fascinating book, Sonia Choquette provides a practical, in-the-trenches guide that will reveal how you can reprogram your brain and change your life for the better.
Ask yourself this question: What frequency are you traveling on right now?

Your Love Is Limitless
5 Affirmations for Loving YOU!
We have so much love in this world, and we have so much love in our hearts, and sometimes we forget. Sometimes we think there isn’t enough, or there is just a small amount. So we hoard what we have or we are afraid to let it go. We are afraid to let it out.But those of us who are willing to learn, realize that the more love we allow to flow out from us, the more there is within us and the more we receive. It is endless and timeless.
Love is really the most powerful healing force that there is. Without love we could not survive at all. If tiny babies are not given love and affection, they wither and die. Most of us think we can survive without love, but we cannot. Love for ourselves is the power that heals us. Practice as much as you can.
Here are 5 Affirmations for Loving Yourself:
I now give myself the love and nourishment I longed for as a child.
Love surrounds me and protects me every day.
I was created by the Universe to express love.
I am willing to fall in love with myself. I truly love me.
Loving myself is the most important thing I do.
Cheers for Nanie’s Home Cooking
Generations of Ethnic Recipes in One Book!
“My idea of heaven is a great big baked potato and someone to share it with“
— Oprah WinfreyWhen I was a kid, nothing tasted better than my grandmother’s home cooking. Some of my fondest memories of her are centered on food. We went to the grocery store a lot during my visits to her house and I remember watching intently as she inspected the produce and consulted the butcher about special cuts of poultry and meat.
Then we’d return and plant ourselves in her kitchen—for hours. There I’d watch her pull out giant metal pots, strike a match to the stove’s pilot light and magically transform ordinary items into heavenly treats.
My grandmother had a vast menu of signature dishes that no five-star restaurant today could match. My favorite was Nanie’s Turkey Stuffing. While most of my family (and me) tried to mimic her recipe, none came close. I think it was because there was one ingredient missing: Nanie’s loving soul . . . a soul that ignited her passion for creating a meal with one purpose only—that her family enjoy every bite!
When I started to read one of our new releases this month—America I AM Pass It Down Cookbook, I could almost smell the aroma of Nan’s delicious stuffing wafting from the pages. In this new book, editor Chef Jeff Henderson gathers over 130 soul-filled family recipes and reminisces about his own childhood and how these powerful memories of food, family and tradition have made us who we are today.
Giving voice to everyday people and their triumphs in the kitchen, Chef Jeff and his co-editor Chef Ramin Ganeshram have filled this wonderful cookbook with touching personal stories, photos, and a sampling of the some of the best soul-inspired dishes passed down from generation to generation.
The America I AM Pass It Down Cookbook is a fitting tribute to the vast African American contributions to our culinary history, and also to all of our parents, grandparents and their parents and grandparents before them…and how they impacted us and the world through our palates.
Of course, the only way to truly appreciate Chef Jeff’s book is to sample a taste for yourself. So here’s a recipe that will make a delicious treat for Valentine’s Day:
Chef Jeff’s Red Velvet Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Icing
Las Vegas, Nevada
Makes 12 to 16 cupcakes
Red velvet cake has been a very popular dessert in the South for a long time. There’s a lot of controversy on how to make it best. Chef Jeff, who always wanted to be a baker, likes to keep it simple, using classic ingredients and just a bit of extra sugar. His family likes it sweet.
2 cups all purpose flour
1½ teaspoons baking soda
pinch of salt
1 cup buttermilk
2 large eggs
1½ teaspoons vanilla extract
1 tablespoon white vinegar
2 tablespoons cocoa powder
3 tablespoons red food coloring
1 stick unsalted butter, softened
1½–2 cups granulated sugar
Cream Cheese Icing
1 stick unsalted butter, softened
1½–2 cups powdered confectioners’ sugar
½ pinch salt
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Cupcakes
Preheat oven to 350º F. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking soda and salt, and set aside. In a separate medium bowl, whisk buttermilk, eggs, vanilla, and white vinegar, and set aside. In a small bowl, whisk cocoa powder and food color until it becomes a paste. With a table top or hand-held mixer in a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar on medium speed until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Scrape down sides of bowl, then beat 30 seconds to 1 minute. Add half of flour mixture and beat on low speed about 45 seconds until incorporated, then add half the buttermilk mixture and beat until combined. Repeat, adding remaining flour mixture, then remaining buttermilk mixture. Beat until thoroughly incorporated.
Line cupcake pans with paper cupcake liners. Spoon batter into paper liners until ¾ full. Place pans in oven on center rack. Bake cupcakes until a toothpick can be inserted in the center and come out clean, 22–25 minutes. Remove pans from oven and let cool at room temp.
Icing
Using tabletop or a hand-held mixture, add all ingredients. Beat on medium-high until mixture is fluffy, about 3 minutes, scraping bowl as needed. Refrigerate until ready to use.
Assembly
After cupcakes have cooled, remove cream cheese icing from refrigerator. Using pastry spatula or butter knife, spread desired amount of icing on each cupcake.
P.S. Chef Jeff’s America I AM Pass It Down Cookbook was created as a collaborative effort with Tavis Smiley’s America I AM exhibit, an astonishing touring exhibition celebrating 400 years of African American contributions to the nation through artifacts, documents, multimedia, photographs and music. P. S. S. If you’re watching calories, Chef Jeff includes lots of healthy alternatives in his book along with healthy variations on some of the recipes.
