About the Killam Prizes
The Killam Prizes are awarded annually for the outstanding career achievements of Canadian researchers in health sciences, engineering, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences.
It was Mrs. Killam’s desire that those selected to receive scholarships:
“Be likely to contribute to the advancement of learning or to win distinction in a profession. A Killam scholar should not be a one-sided person. . . Special distinction of intellect should be founded upon sound character.”
The University of Calgary Killam Pre-Doctoral Scholarships are provided annually from the Izaak Walton Killam Memorial Fund for Advanced Studies.
The Killam Pre-Doctoral Scholarship and Prize Programmes were established in memory of Izaak Walton Killam through the Will of his wife, Dorothy Johnston Killam, and through gifts made during her lifetime. The primary purpose is to support advanced education and research at five selected Canadian universities and the Canada Council for the Arts.
They were inaugurated in 1981 through a donation by Mrs. Dorothy J. Killam, in memory of her husband, Izaak Walton Killam. The prizes were created to honour eminent Canadian scholars and scientists actively engaged in research, whether in industry, government agencies or universities.
