…Save lives of over 16 million Women and Children
22/09/2010World leaders attending the Anti-poverty Summit on Wednesday pledged over 40 billion dollars for Women’s and Children’s Health. 16 million women and children will be saved by this drive. UN Radio’s Joceyline Sambira reports.
The money will pay for a Global Strategy for Women and Children’s Health being launched on Wednesday by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, heads of state and government and other stakeholders.
The strategy is a concerted worldwide effort by the public and private sectors to save the lives of more than 16 million Women and Children. The Secretary-General stressed the importance of a broad partnership to implement the strategy.
“This Global Strategy for Women’s and Children’s Health provides a clear roundup for making a fundamental difference in millions of lives. Piecemeal approaches yield peicemeal results. We need a broad partnership as we see today. We all have a role to play: governments, internatonal organizations, business, researchers, philanthropists, health professionals and civil society.”
Since Monday, up to 130 heads of state and government have been reporting in the United Nations General Assembly on what their countries have done to, among other things, fight poverty and improve people’s health by 2015.
