Myself and some family members as well as friends are participating in “Taking Steps Against Breast Cancer” in Whitby on October 17th to support the mission of the Canadian Cancer Society. Mom and I were both diagnosed with cancer in 2008. She had her breast cancer reoccur (13 years after the original bout) and I had throat cancer. Mom decided that after she/we got better she would throw a big fundraiser to raise money for cancer research. As you can tell mom did not get better but I did. So we do this fundraising for her and in honour of her. In her honour the team is named the “Jackie Bond Bunch”. My sister Cindy and I have both been tested for the Breast Cancer Gene which has been discovered through research. We have both tested positive for the BRCA 1 gene. This tells us that we have a 50-85% probability of developing breast cancer as well as a much higher than average chance of developing ovarian cancer. These are the cold hard facts. It is the result of walks like this generating the necessary funds that we have this information and are able to take a proactive approach to this terrible news. We both have some serious surgeries coming up; but, we know we are doing the right thing. Plus, if my mom was here she would be agreeing with our decisions. Our decisions are made out of a desire to never (God willing) go through what my incredible mom succumbed to. As well, I don’t think I have it in me to survive another radiation and chemotherapy treatment. I honestly believe it would kill me.
