STEM CELLS Required – CHINESE COMMUNITY Calling all Women of Action!

“OUT of time:  WHY couldn’t this man find a Donor?”

reports the TORONTO STAR, today.

He in now in intensive care and this is Our “Cry for Help” going out to Our World……

Jason Cheung, a York University student, 23 years of age, has been searching for a stem-cell donor to treat his leukemia, diagnosed in 2006.  To-date he has had no success……

Chinese Canadians make up a small percentage of registered donors in our community, causing a much lower chance to find a match when required.  Canada’s Chinese community includes only 2%  (or 5,000 entrants) of this country’s registration. Internationally, they also only represent approximately 2% of registrants, a very small participation.  For a Chinese patient, the percentage of a match reads only 10% chance of success, at this point in time, compared to an 82% chance for an average while Canadian.   A percentage so low makes it almost impossible for the medical community to help the Chinese patients.  Records tells that  only 30% will find a family members compatible, leaving a 70% gap for patients that will need to outsource the required stem-cells.  Perhaps, the poight of our own Jason Cheung will inspire more of this community to participate in the global drive of stem-cell research and registry. * There are about 20,000 Chinese Canadians, alone, seeking suitable donors .

This is a sincere example of reason as to WHY people need to register with our country’s stem-cell database, a network that links national registers across the globe in matching donor searches.  It will announce its “first ever” CHINESE STEM-CELL DRIVE, on March 27, 2010, with collection sites in Toronto and Vancouver.

The wise action to take in this national crisis is for all Chinese Canadians ….”to register with One Match“, says Susan Go, NATIONAL CHINESE STEM CELL DRIVE.

A Celebration of Women offers our prayers for Jason and any other patient,  family thereof and hope this little message of supplication offers some support, if not success.
