March 20th is the UN International Day of Happiness.
With our world facing unprecedented challenges, wellbeing matters more than ever. This is a day when we choose to take action to help others, they benefit, we benefit and we set an example of kindness that can ripple out into the world too.
UN states: If you’re happy and you know it, celebrate it on International Day of Happiness on March 20! Other than being in a neutral state, happy is how we should mostly be. Unfortunately, emotions like anger and sadness are increasingly becoming a default way to be for a lot of us, so here’s a day to cheer up and appreciate the good things and silver linings in life.
We celebrate International Day of Happiness thanks to the work done by the United Nations and its partner nonprofit group Action for Happiness, which is composed of people from 160 countries. The ultimate goal of the movement is to spread awareness that progress is not only about increasing bottom lines and encouraging economic growth, but well-being and human happiness as well.
In 2011, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution that made it a “fundamental human goal” to give happiness as much priority as economic opportunity.
Two years later, in 2013, all 193 member states of the UN celebrated the world’s first International Day of Happiness, and it has continued to grow since.
Here are four ways that you can spread happiness today:
SHARE POSITIVE MESSAGES
Spread ideas that promote peace, kindness and understanding, online and in real life.
CONNECT WITH PEOPLE
Reach out to people who you know are connected to a crisis and offer your care and support.
GIVE DIRECTLY
Donate to causes working on the front line of a crisis or find a way to help with local efforts.
GET INFORMED
Stress and unhappiness due to work, the economic situation, fears over health and safety and myriad other factors can be a heavy weight around anyone’s neck. But by doing a little reading on well-being, mindfulness, and other ways to get in touch with what’s most important, you may start to grab a new outlook on life.

We can do more to create a happier and kinder world when we connect with others and unite together.
Action for Happiness is a movement of people taking action to create a happier and kinder world, together. The mission of Action for Happiness is to promote a happier world, through a culture that prioritises happiness and kindness.
We do this by helping people get together regularly (face-to-face where possible) to learn evidence-based skills for happier living, feel a sense of belonging and commit to personal action to create more happiness, both for themselves and others.
We have no religious, political or commercial affiliations and welcome people of all faiths (or none) and all parts of society. Members of the movement make a simple pledge: to try to create more happiness in the world.
Our patron is the Dalai Lama.
