Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in British history, ascended to the throne on February 6, 1952. The princess was 25 and on a royal visit to Kenya when she heard about the sudden death of her father, King George VI. Her Majesty became the queen of Britain and more than a dozen other realms including Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne will be a good deal more earthbound: The 95-year-old monarch plans to spend a quiet Sunday at her country estate, Sandringham, where her father died on Feb. 6, 1952. Four days of festivities to celebrate her Platinum Jubilee are scheduled for June 2022.
In a message marking the 70th anniversary of her reign, the Queen said it was her “sincere wish” that Camilla would have that title. Legally, Camilla will be Queen when Charles is King, but the Palace had said when they married in 2005 that it was intended she would be known as Princess Consort instead.
There will be year-long Platinum Jubilee celebrations throughout the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth and around the world as communities come together to celebrate The Queen’s historic reign. To celebrate this unprecedented anniversary, events and initiatives will take place throughout the year, culminating in a four day UK bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June. The bank holiday will provide an opportunity for communities and people throughout the United Kingdom to come together to celebrate the historic milestone.
“I hope this Jubilee will bring together families and friends, neighbours and communities.” Her Majesty The Queen
Queen Elizabeth II further states: “This anniversary also affords me a time to reflect on the goodwill shown to me by people of all nationalities, faiths and ages in this country and around the world over these years. I would like to express my thanks to you all for your support.
I remain eternally grateful for, and humbled by, the loyalty and affection that you continue to give me. And when, in the fullness of time, my son Charles becomes King, I know you will give him and his wife Camilla the same support that you have given me; and it is my sincere wish that, when that time comes, Camilla will be known as Queen Consort as she continues her own loyal service.”
Queen Elizabeth II is the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee.
