Dr. Phyllis Chesler

 
 

Phyllis Chesler, Ph.D is an Emerita Professor of Psychology and Women’s Studies at City University of New York. She is an author, psychotherapist and an expert courtroom witness. She has lectured and organized political, legal, religious and human rights campaigns in the United States and in Canada, Europe, the Middle East and the Far East.

A popular guest on campuses and in national and international print, television, radio and online media, she has been an expert commentator on the major events of our time. She has lived in Kabul, Afghanistan, and in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. She currently resides in Manhattan.

Dr. Chesler is co-founder of the still ongoing Association for Women in Psychology (1969) and the National Women’s Health Network (1974), and is a charter member of the Women’s Forum (1973-74).

She is a founder and Board member of the International Committee for Women of the Wall (1989), as well as an affiliated Professor with Haifa and Bar Ilan Universities.

Dr. Chesler is also on the steering committee of the Human Rights Coalition Against Radical Islam.

Dr. Chesler’s thirteen books and thousands of articles and speeches have inspired people on many diverse issues.

But until Phyllis Chesler’s now-classic book, a profound silence prevailed about woman’s inhumanity to woman. Women’s aggression may not take the same form as men’s, but girls and women are indeed aggressive, often indirectly and mainly toward one another.

More than men, women depend upon one another for emotional intimacy and bonding, and exclusionary and sexist behavior enforces female conformity and discourages independence and psychological growth.

Continuing the pioneering work begun in Women and Madness Chesler’s bestselling book that broke the story on double standards in psychology—Woman’s Inhumanity to Woman draws on important studies, revolutionary theories, literature, and hundreds of original interviews.

Chesler urges us to look within, to treat other women realistically, ethically, and kindly, and to forge bold and compassionate alliances. This is a necessary next step for women, without which they will never be liberated.

In 2009, she published a new edition of Women’s Inhumanity to Woman with a new introduction; and, a completely revised edition of Mothers on Trial with eight new chapters is currently in press.

Dr. Chesler has published two important academic studies about honor killings. They appeared in Middle East Quarterly in 2009 and again in 2010.

Her work has been translated into many languages, including Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Polish, Hebrew, and into many European languages.

Dr. Chesler has lectured on mental health, legal, medical, interfaith, and feminist subjects. In the last decade, her work has concerned women’s religious rights, the resurgence of anti-Semitism and jihad, Islamic gender and religious apartheid, and the ideological and propaganda war against America, Israel and the West.

In the last few years, she has been interviewed hundreds of times in the media about anti-Semitism, jihadic terrorism and violence against women.

Woman’s Inhumanity to Woman, Jihadic Style.

“While I was enjoying some sunshine in Savannah, (more to come about that), World War Four continued to rage blithely on.

Al-Qaeda in Uzbekistan, Pakistan, and North Africa, threatened terrorist attacks against Germany and Holland and threatened to kill a British hostage (captured on the border between Niger and Mali), if Britain does not release a radical Muslim preacher.

The Pakistani Taliban shot a couple dead for alleged adultery and their execution in Islamabad was captured on a cellphone; Egyptian police arrested a Muslim woman for having married a Coptic Christian; in Lahore, a Muslim husband killed his wife for failing to bear a son; in the Punjab, a Sikh physician-husband amputated his wife’s hand and that of her cousin with whom he suspected she was having an affair.

So much for male terrorists in foreign lands.

I carefully smelled the roses in Georgia, there were three carefully organized explosions on one day in Iraq, which killed a total of 80 civilians. One explosion was carried out by a woman in a black abaya, holding a 5 year-old child’s hand, (probably not her own).

She killed herself and 28 other Muslims in a crowded market in a Baghdad slum. The civilians, many of whom were other women, were waiting on line for free flour, cooking oil, tea, macaroni, and other staples that the police were handing out. Of course, police officers died as well.

Many people have written to me, surprised, outraged, perhaps demoralized by the fact that this latest Muslim-on-Muslim atrocity was committed by a woman and mainly against other women.

As the author of Woman’s Inhumanity to Woman, which is just now being released in a new edition with a new Introduction, I am, unfortunately, not surprised.

Please recall how quickly the mainstream media covered the “sensational” use of rape by the male members of Al-Qaeda as a way to recruit female human bombs. At the time, people seemed surprised by the fact that Samira Jassim, an Iraqi woman, played an essential role in the further exploitation of these rape victims.

Although women depend upon each other for emotional intimacy and social stability, they are also highly competitive with, mistrustful of, or hostile towards other women. Like men, women have also internalized sexist beliefs.

Are women really sexists?

Of course they are.

A study of 15,000 people in nineteen countries on five continents found that women hold sexist views just as men do. However, some studies suggest that women with low self-esteem are more likely to internalize negative views of women which may account for how such women treat other women: With cruelty rather than kindness.”

Over the years, Dr. Chesler has been published and interviewed in The Washington Post, heThe International Herald Tribune, The Times of London, Il Foglio, Ha’aretz, The New York Times, The Globe and Mail, The London Guardian, Muslim World Today, Yediot Aharonot, Science Magazine, etc.

She has published steadily in FrontPagemag.com, The Jewish Press, The National Review, The Washington Times, The Jewish Week, The Intellectual Conservative, The World Jewish Digest, and Middle East Quarterly.

In more recent years, Chesler has sparked controversy, both for her work on honor-based violence, including honor killing, and for her outspoken criticism of anti-Jewish racism. Beginning in the 1990s, Dr. Chesler had authored six books about the failures of Western feminism, anti-Semitism, Islamic gender and religious apartheid and honor killing and has criticized Western feminists for failing to defend women in non-Western societies.

Her work on these topics has sparked backlash. In April 2017, Dr. Chesler’s keynote address to a conference on honor-based violence at the University of Arkansas Law School was cancelled. The controversy was written about widely on social media, and Dr. Chesler was almost immediately invited by a group of grassroots activists at University College London to address a conference at that institution in November 2017.

Also in 2017, Taylor & Francis declined to publish her two volumes in this area, New English Review Press immediately agreed to do so. In the fall of 2017, they published Islamic Gender Apartheid: Exposing a Veiled War Against Women with a new introduction. The original introduction appeared at Tablet, Middle East Forum, and Mosaic.

At the same time, Dr. Chesler received accolades from Islamic feminist organizations.

In 2018, she received a “True Honor” award from the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s Rights Organization (IKWRO) at a ceremony in London.

The same year, she selected, edited, and newly introduced her volume A Family Conspiracy: Honor Killing.
April 2018. It was translated into German by Henryk M. Broder’s group and posted at his blog Die Achse des Guten.

A major interview with Dr. Chesler appeared in EMMA, a German feminist magazine.

In addition, from 2012–2020 Chesler submitted courtroom affidavits to support asylum applications for girls and women at risk of honor-based violence in their countries of origin.

In a 2021 article for Tablet Magazine titled “The Progressive Erasure of Feminism,” Chesler wrote that the Equality Act would “dangerously privilege a minority over the majority by endangering women’s sex-based rights in terms of sports, and women-only safe spaces in prisons, DV and homeless shelters, and in the military.”
