Which of these 3 Different Types of Juicers is Right For Me?

Juicing is as complicated as it is good for you. While the practice of juicing is a great way to get more nutrients into your system, it can be very hard to determine which options are right for your needs. In this article, we give an overview of the various options on the market, so you can see which is right for you!

1. Centrifugal Juicer

This is probably the most popular option on the market because it is very fast, very straightforward, and very effective. The centrifugal juicer operates in largely the same way as a washing machine, rapidly spinning your fruits and vegetables until the juice is separated from the pulp.

Though a centrifugal juicer is never rapid, it’s quite possibly the quickest way to get the job done, and it also happens to be extremely easy to clean.

As the fruits and vegetables spin around, they are consistently minced by blades that move at 12,000 rotations per minute. The rapid speed of the blades helps to ensure that as much juice is extracted from the fruits and vegetables as possible. Meanwhile, the pulp is filtered out into a storage basket, leaving only the juice behind.

However, centrifugal juicers are very noisy and sound a lot like a blender. They also tend to dilute the potency of the juice because of the intensity of the blades.

The rapidly spinning blades also make it very hard to juice leafy greens. Why? The rapid rotation of the blades can be a little bit much on the delicate leaves of the greens, making it very hard to separate the pulp from the juice.

What the centrifugal juicer has in efficiency, it lacks in nuance.

2. Masticating Juicer

Masticating juicers are essentially the exact opposite of centrifugal juicers. While centrifugal juicers prioritize speed, the masticating juicer is more than willing to take its time.

The auger propels the fruits and vegetables within the juicer drum at a rate of around 100 rotations per minute, making it substantially slower than the centrifugal unit. As a result of the slow squeezing approach, the juice is never oxidized, which goes a long way towards enhancing its flavor.

The masticating approach is also a natural fit for leafy greens. Because there are no rapidly spinning blades, the pulp does not become inextricably blended with the juice.

Unfortunately, there are some issues as well. The most obvious one is simply that these juicers take a long time to get going. If you want to make juice on the go, this probably won’t be the option you want.

They are also usually more expensive. If you have a serious budget for this purchase, then, by all means, go for it. However, if you’re just dipping your toes into the world of juicing, consider going with something a little simpler.

3. Twin Gear Juicer

The twin gear juicer is like an upgraded version of the masticating unit. The biggest difference is that it uses two augers instead of one to extract the juice from the pulp. As a result, you get higher, better yields. These juicers are prized for the fact that they are very versatile and very effective.

However, you don’t see them as much in homes. This is largely due to the fact that twin gear juicers are almost always very pricey. You certainly can add them to your home kitchen setup, but doing so will require a significant upfront investment.

Aside from price, they leave very little to complain about. The only other thing worth mentioning is that they are generally thought to be difficult to clean. The extra gears and augers add a level of complication that average juice drinkers might not be looking to add to their routine.
