Playing football, poker, blackjack, rugby, and even weight lifting are all sport that is often instantly associated with men. The big stars in these sports and games when seen in the media are generally men. Sometimes it seems that women’s participation in these sports is often overlooked. However, there are big money sponsorship deals in many sportswomen participate in, and even more, so huge following that just doesn’t seem to get as much media coverage as they should.
Let’s forget the mixed sports like tennis, badminton, volleyball, swimming and even golf and look at some of those sports in which females are being paid top dollar or have broken records, but yet do not get as much coverage as celebrity sportswomen like Serena Williams and Martina Navratilova.
What should be happening is that our female sports stars start to gain more coverage, conjure up larger sponsorship deals and really start to give the male side of the sports a run for their money. Let’s take a look at some of the sports that maybe you could start to follow in order to bring female sporting further into the limelight and encourage more young women to play sport.
Football or Soccer
Soccer is a huge sport worldwide. Even in the USA, it is now much bigger than it was in the past since the Major Soccer League formed and began to attract stars like the gorgeous David Beckham. Well did you know that there is a huge women’s soccer following in the USA? All you need to do Is visit the Women MLS website to see just how much of a following soccer has for women.
In Europe soccer has been a long loved sport and of course, the female soccer leagues in place such as the United Kingdom are huge. The games attract large crowds and the top flight women players are paid wages up to $500 000 year – that does not include sponsorship deals.
Weight Lifting
If you are a close follower of the Olympics or any type of athletics events that includes weight lifting, then you will already know that this sport has its fair share of top female weight lifters. Admittedly most women would prefer to keep a slim inline body as this is all the fashion. That said, for those that are competitive and want to outdo the men, well, let’s just say there are some pretty powerful females out there lifting ridiculous size weights.
Spanish born Lidia Valentín was a gold medalist after scoring 140kg in the clean and jerk and 118kg in the Snatch event totaling a massive 258kg to win the event; s feat 99% of men in this world could not achieve in their current state.
Poker, Blackjack, and Online Gambling
Now maybe when you think of slot machines, then you can imagine that females are clearly going to be attracted by these games. Las Vegas is full of them, but in general, you would expect them to be elderly ladies playing a few penny slots. That may be quite true. However, take a trip over to the poker and blackjack tables in a casino these days (or even roulette), and there are plenty of females that actually play professionally.
The MIT team that was famous for blackjack card counting throughout 1979 through to 1989 has several female players on board thanks to their ability to multitask and their smart minds. Today card counting is no longer a viable option because the casinos have ways to prevent it, but that has not stopped numerous female blackjack players ply their trade at blackjack. Check out live22 casino which is a Malaysian style casino that has an equal number of female players to male players.
And lest we forget poker where some of the best players are female. Joanne Liu, Vanessa Rousso, Liv Boeree, Annette Obrestad, Annie Duke, Kathy Liebert, and poker’s most feared female player Vanessa Selbst. Everyone one of these female players are playing what many believe to be a male-dominated game, but yet they are among the top poker player in the world alongside the men.
Rugby
Now, most women may cringe at the thought of rugby because of the pain for one. It’s certainly not a sport you would want to play if you are trying to get pregnant or you are about to get married. Well to some females those things do not matter. They love rugby and play rugby. Arguably this is the oddest sport of all the ones mentioned here to think that there are females that regularly enjoy this game. Not only do they enjoy it, but they also go at it nail and hammer just as the men do. There is a women’s World Cup that actually gets a lot of attention pulling huge sponsorship money and big crowds to the games.
We could also start to mention the UFC, boxing, and other physical sports that involve fighting or self-defense here too. The point is that many people often talk about sport and when they do, the only time females seem to be mentioned in high esteem is tennis – and ok possibly the UFC with the likes of Cris Cyborg and Joanna Jedrzejczyk often headlining on the sports pages for their UFC bouts. I think that as women we should give our fellow sportswomen more support in these games.
Next time you sit down and switch on the TV and you fancy some sport, look out for female competitions and give it your all to give the ladies the support they deserve.
