1. Lady Hester Stanhope (1776-1839)

Lady Hester Stanhope was a British adventurer, also known as a ‘Queen Hester’. She is remembered as a passionate adventurer in an age when women were discouraged from being travelers.

After her uncle’s death, she received a lot of money. It gave her an opportunity to travel around the world. She did so many things and explored so many places, starting from crossing the Syrian dessert to riding an Arab stallion. Stanhope found her destiny in the Middle East.

2. Nellie Bly (1864-1922)

Nellie Bly was a well-known journalist who traveled the world in 72 days. No one had ever circled the globe so fast! It was meant to take 80 days just like in the Jules Verne’s book ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’. After the,e trip Nellie wrote her own book about the journey ‘Around the World in Seventy-Two Days’.

3. Bessie Coleman (1892-1926)

Bessie was the first African-American woman pilot in the world. American schools didn’t admit women or African-Americans, so Bessie learned French and travelled to France in order to get a pilot’s license. And she got it! Bessie said that the air is the only place free from prejudices. This woman is truly an inspiration.

4. Freya Stark (1893-1993)

Freya Stark was a British traveler and writer. Her journeys led her to Turkey and to the Middle East. She made the first accurate maps of the Islamic world while living in Baghdad. She also completed a couple of dangerous treks into the wilderness of western Iran. In some, parts of it no Westerner had ever been before. Also, Freya is the author of more than 24 travel books.

5. Amelia Earhart (1897-1937)

She is a ‘Queen of the Air’ and the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She was also the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to the United States mainland. Amelia made lots of historic solo flights, culminating in an attempt to fly around the globe. She disappeared over, the Pacific Ocean and she was never found.

6. Lady Grace Drummond Hay (1895-1946)

Drummond Hay was a foreign correspondent in Ethiopia and China. She was also the first woman to travel around the world in a zeppelin. Drummond Hay spent her life traveling and writing about her experiences. During the World War II, she was interned in a Japanese prison camp in the Philippines.

7. Gertrude Bell (1868-1926)

She traveled to such countries like Mesopotamia, Greater Syria, Asia Minor, Arabia and taught herself Persian and Arabian. Also, Gertrude was a big supporter of Iraqi freedom and she is credited with drawing the boundaries of the modern state of Iraq in 1920s. She charted new routes up mountains what makes her a female traveler worth remembering.

8. Louise Boyd (1887-1972)

Louise Boyd traveled to Europe and then to Egypt. After visiting the northernmost point in Europe she developed an interest in exploring the Arctic. Louise explored Greenland and the Arctic. She spent much of the time photographing and documenting hundreds of botanical specimens. Louise Boyd became the first woman to fly over the North Pole in 1955.

9. Annie Smith Peck (1850-1935)

She was a well-known mountain climber who set several mountain climbing records. Peck was the first climber of the north peak of Peru’s Huascaran, it was later named Cumbre Ana Peck in her honor. She continued to climb into her 80s showing us that no matter what age you are, you can always do what you love. Peck also wrote several books about her journeys.

10. Harriet Chalmers Adams (1875-1937)

Harriet Chalmers Adams was an American explorer. She traveled around South America while learning about photography and storytelling. Adams explored Haiti, Turkey, the South Pacific, Siberia, and France. She was a longtime correspondent and photographer for National Geographic. Adams eventually became a war correspondent.
