The World Humanitarian Summit was initiated by the UN Secretary General to improve global humanitarian action, and will culminate in Istanbul in 2016.

There will be 10 consultation meetings around the world as well as an online platform to solicit input beginning in May 2014, and will culminate in May 2016 in Istanbul at the first-ever humanitarian summit of this scale and scope. The WHS is being managed by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

Participants of the regional and online consultations will prioritize the relevant issues in their respective regions. Four themes will serve as broad categories to guide the conversations: (1) humanitarian effectiveness; (2) reducing vulnerability and managing risk; (3) transformation through innovation; and (4) serving the needs of people in conflict.

An initiative of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, managed by UN OCHA, the first World Humanitarian Summit will bring together governments, humanitarian organizations, people affected by humanitarian crises and new partners including the private sector to propose solutions to our most pressing challenges and set an agenda to keep humanitarian action fit for the future.
