Stone Fox Bride founder and drop-dead-gorgeous mother, Molly Guy wasn’t quick to embrace motherhood.
The free spirit shares her thoughts about her sweet daughter Sunny and what being a mom is like on The Glow, a site dedicated to inspiring and fashionable moms.
“I was very ambivalent about becoming a mother. Once she arrived, the love was like a drug. But that whole passage of time was also really colored by an intense sadness. Embracing the responsibility of motherhood was a real mindf*&*ck. No longer could I get away with being a selfish, disorganized, chain-smoking negligent who bounced checks left and right and hit snooze a hundred times while dirty dishes piled up in the sink and never answered to anyone.”
Womanhood and Motherhood aren’t ‘synonymous’, NOT for all Women.
Not all women have an innate maternal passion with longing visions of being pregnant and craddling a baby. Not all women feel destined to take care of a home with a little babe on the hip and dinner cooking on the stove. Perhaps the hesitation stems from raw selfishness or maybe even a relentless devotion to career aspirations, but some now mothers weren’t always certain about (or even happy) with the idea of motherhood. Yet, somehow, a teeny tiny little person rocked the skeptic’s universe and filled her heart and soul with unimaginable joy.
If the concept of having a family never really matched your dreamy lifestyle as a wayward rebel or career-driven gal, then succumbing to motherhood and homemaking is likely to be a struggle. Loving the little baby you sing to sleep is hardly an issue, but shedding your former self and embracing homemaking may require some effort.
Domestic Accessories
Household chores like vacuuming, mopping and laundry can spawn resentment for the gal who’s used to caring more about bottles of vino than bottles of cleaning supplies. Think of kitchen appliances and cleaning devices as the lavish accessories of your home. A Dyson vacuum with all the bells and whistles from Macy’s is your toy to make your carpeting look flawless. A collection of Wusthof knives from Williams Sonoma will turn cooking into a culinary adventure. Every so often, treat yourself to a cool new tool, such as a cute owl spatula from Sur La Table, that adds excitement to everyday household tasks.

Happy Hobbies
If homemaking and taking care of the little one is now your full-time job, then use this time as an opportunity for unleashing curiosity and adopting a new passion. Since you’ll want to capture memories and portraits of your family, challenge yourself to the art of photography. Splurge on a big lens camera with all the fancy features, and frame your images to use as wall decor. Molly Guy grew an affinity for interiors, from arranging antlers to color-coding her bookshelves. Find your interior design style and embark on home decorating projects by shopping at flea markets and searching on Craigslist.

You’re a contemporary non-traditionalist who deplores the idea of being a 1950s submissive housewife who aims to please her husband. Surrendering to the stereotype doesn’t have to entail a loss of identity or dying independence. Just play up your whimsical idiosyncrasies and embrace your overall je ne sais quoi while adopting homemaking rituals, and yes, even daring to fit the stereotypical housewife mold. Don a vintage Anthropologie apron while baking red velvet cupcakes or sew your very own apron design. Go glam with fire engine red lipstick, and layer pearls around your neck as you and the babe head to the park to play. It’s true; homemaking and motherhood may just end up being the biggest blessing of your life.
