Jennifer Ettinger was not always a successful best-selling author, fitness expert, TV personality and enthusiastic USANA Associate. In the 1990s, she was diagnosed with ‘chronic fatigue syndrome‘ and ‘fibromyalgia‘ and was completely bedridden. Getting up and taking a shower were the major goals she hoped to achieve each day.

exhaustedChronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) is the common name for a group of significantly debilitating medical conditions characterized by persistent fatigue and other specific symptoms that lasts for a minimum of six months in adults (and 3 months in children or adolescents). The fatigue is not due to exertion, not significantly relieved by rest, and is not caused by other medical conditions. CFS may also be referred to as myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), post-viral fatigue syndrome (PVFS), chronic fatigue immune dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS), or by several other terms. Biological, genetic, infectious and psychological mechanisms have been proposed, but the etiology of CFS is not understood and it may have multiple causes.

Symptoms of CFS include malaise after exertion; unrefreshing sleep, widespread muscle and joint pain, sore throat, headaches of a type not previously experienced, cognitive difficulties, chronic and severe mental and physical exhaustion, and other characteristic symptoms in a previously healthy and active person. Additional symptoms may be reported, including muscle weakness, increased sensitivity to light, sounds and smells, orthostatic intolerance, digestive disturbances, depression, painful and often slightly swollen lymph nodes, cardiac and respiratory problems. It is unclear if these symptoms represent co-morbid conditions or if they are produced by an underlying etiology of CFS. CFS symptoms vary in number, type, and severity from person to person. Quality of life of persons with CFS can be extremely compromised.

Fatigue is a common symptom in many illnesses, but CFS is comparatively rare. Estimates of prevalence vary from 7 to 3,000 cases of CFS for every 100,000 adults; national health organizations have estimated more than one million Americans and approximately a quarter of a million people in the UK have CFS.

CFS occurs more often in women than men, and is less prevalent among children and adolescents.

Although there is agreement that CFS poses genuine threats to health, happiness and productivity, various physicians’ groups, researchers and patient advocates promote differing nomenclatures, diagnostic criteria, etiologic hypotheses and treatments, resulting in controversy about many aspects of the disorder. The name “chronic fatigue syndrome” is controversial; many patients and advocacy groups, as well as some experts, believe the name trivializes the medical condition and they promote a name change.

Fibromyalgia (FM or FMS) is characterized by chronic widespread pain and allodynia (a heightened and painful response to pressure). Its exact cause is unknown but is believed to involve psychological, genetic, neurobiological and environmental factors. Fibromyalgia symptoms are not restricted to pain, leading to the use of the alternative term fibromyalgia syndrome for the condition. Other symptoms include debilitating fatigue, sleep disturbance, and joint stiffness.

triggerSome patients also report difficulty with swallowing, bowel and bladder abnormalities, numbness and tingling, and cognitive dysfunction. Fibromyalgia is frequently comorbid with psychiatric conditions such as depression and anxiety and stress-related disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder. Not all fibromyalgia patients experience all associated symptoms. Fibromyalgia is estimated to affect 2–4% of the population, with a female to male incidence ratio of approximately 9:1.

The term “fibromyalgia” derives from new Latin, fibro-, meaning “fibrous tissues“, Greek myo-, “muscle“, and Greek algos-, “pain“; thus the term literally means “muscle and connective tissue pain“.

symptom_percentThere is evidence that environmental factors and certain genes increase the risk of developing fibromyalgia – these same genes are also associated with other functional somatic syndromes and major depressive disorder. The central symptom of fibromyalgia, namely widespread pain appears to result from neuro-chemical imbalances including activation of inflammatory pathways in the brain which results in abnormalities in pain processing. The brains of fibromyalgia patients show functional and structural differences from those of healthy individuals, but it is unclear whether the brain anomalies cause fibromyalgia symptoms or are the product of an unknown underlying common cause. Some research suggests that these brain anomalies may be the result of childhood stress, or prolonged or severe stress.

Fibromyalgia has been recognized as a diagnosable disorder by the US National Institutes of Health and the American College of Rheumatology. Fibromyalgia, a central nervous system disorder, is described as a “central sensitization syndrome” caused by neurobiological abnormalities which act to produce physiological pain and cognitive impairments as well as neuro-psychological symptomatology. Despite this there is controversy as to the cause and nature of fibromyalgia, as well as how patients are described by those with differing opinions of the disease in the medical community.

Jennifer became tired of being tired.

She despised the life she was leading and desperately wanted to be freed from the bonds of her illness. So Jennifer fought to get her life back.

She began reading up on her conditions and in every book she read observed four key elements of ‘getting well’:

  • kickboxingEating healthy
  • Getting regular exercise
  • Engaging in meditation
  • Supplementation

Little by little, Jennifer incorporated these elements into her life. She started out by exercising just two minutes a day. Small triumphs lead her to reach larger goals, and by the end of a year, Jennifer was burning 800 calories an hour kickboxing.

“Once I realized I could workout according to my own body shape, I felt more confident and comfortable presenting myself to the world,” Jennifer says.

During that year, Jennifer found what she likes to call her “inner goddess.” Now she helps other women do the same.

Taking what she learned during her time of healing, Jennifer has become an expert on a woman’s self-image. In her book, Find Your Inner Goddess, Jennifer refers to women as having “goddess shapes” and believes fruit shapes, such as pear or apple, should not label the female body. “I want women to feel good about themselves,” Jennifer says, “and to love the bodies they were born in.”

Jennifer believes that any woman can find her “Inner Goddess,” simply by:

  • Customizing workouts according to body shape
  • Dressing according to body shape
  • Eating “beauty boosting” foods
  • Identifying skin tone
  • Being motivated through “goddess affirmations”
  • Getting the right amount of USANA supplements

jennifer ettinger bookHelping women get “body confidence beautiful” is Jennifer’s No. 1 goal. Through her website, Fit Your Style™, Jennifer provides women the secrets to body confidence through exercise tips, motivational quotes, goals and healthy recipes.
