Beverley D. Burdeyney
“Do Your Personal Best, and the Rewards will Come!”
Beverley D. Burdeyney is living proof that being fit can lead to a healthier life. She is 66-year old Personal Exercise Coach who has a spina bifida – but you would never know it. She firmly believes that the aging process can be retarded.Spina bifida (Latin: “split spine”) is a developmental congenital disorder caused by the incomplete closing of the embryonic neural tube. Some vertebrae overlying the spinal cord are not fully formed and remain unfused and open. If the opening is large enough, this allows a portion of the spinal cord to protrude through the opening in the bones. There may or may not be a fluid-filled sac surrounding the spinal cord. Other neural tube defects include anencephaly, a condition in which the portion of the neural tube that will become the cerebrum does not close, and encephalocele, which results when other parts of the brain remain unfused.
Spina bifida malformations fall into three categories: spina bifida occulta, spina bifida cystica with meningocele, and spina bifida cystica with myelomeningocele. The most common location of the malformations is the lumbar and sacral areas.
Myelomeningocele is the most significant and common form, and this leads to disability in most affected individuals. The terms spina bifida and myelomeningocele are usually used interchangeably.
Spina bifida can be surgically closed after birth, but this does not restore normal function to the affected part of the spinal cord. Intrauterine surgery for spina bifida has also been performed, and the safety and efficacy of this procedure are currently being investigated. A study conducted with mothers who had prior spina bifida births indicates the incidence of spina bifida can be decreased by up to 70% when the mother takes daily folic acid supplements prior to conception.
Spina bifida is one of the most common birth defects with a worldwide incidence of about 1 in every 1000 births. The Mayo Clinic states Spina bifida is part of a group of birth defects called neural tube defects. The neural tube is the embryonic structure that eventually develops into the baby’s brain and spinal cord and the tissues that enclose them.
Normally, the neural tube forms early in the pregnancy and closes by the 28th day after conception. In babies with spina bifida, a portion of the neural tube fails to develop or close properly, causing defects in the spinal cord and in the bones of the backbone.
Spina bifida occurs in various forms of severity. When treatment for spina bifida is necessary, it’s done through surgery, although such treatment doesn’t always completely resolve the problem.
Comic Lucille Ball once told women that the secret to staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly and lie about your age.
Toronto’s Beverley Burdeyney would have some trouble with that last part. Proud of her ripe young age of 71, she still works full-time as an exercise coach, writes and lectures about fitness, and tells other women to seize the moment.
“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning to dance in the rain,” she says.
Burdeyney also volunteers for Women of Baycrest, a network of influential women who fundraise for Baycrest’s Women’s Brain Health Research Fund to support a research chair at the Toronto academic health sciences centre which focuses on age-related health and social issues, illness, and impairment.
