WINNER, WINNER, KIDS’ STATE DINNER
Vegan Powerhouse Pesto Pasta and Alaskan Ceviche with Mango may not seem like your traditional kid-friendly fare. But, as part of the second annual Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, some of America’s most creative junior chefs impressed judges with their seriously sophisticated (and health conscious!) palates. Over 1,300 lunchtime recipes were submitted, but only one winning recipe was selected from each U.S. state, Washington, DC, and three U.S. territories.
On July 9th, these fifty-four budding chefs will travel to the White House for the second annual Kids’ “State Dinner.” The winning recipes were chosen based on guidance that supports USDA’s MyPlate to ensure that meals were affordable, original, healthy, and yummy. Check out photos of the winning recipes and go behind the scenes of the judging here!

USDA RELEASES “SMART SNACKS IN SCHOOL” STANDARDS
In case you missed it, the USDA recently announced its ongoing commitment to improve school nutrition by establishing science-based, common-sense standards for snacks sold in schools. The new standards will replace unhealthy options, like fruit flavored candies, chocolate bars, and regular sodas with healthier options, like fruit cups, granola bars, and no-calorie flavored water. Here’s what the First Lady had to say about the standards:
“Many parents are working hard every day to make sure they provide healthy, balanced meals and snacks to their kids. Unfortunately, we don’t always have control over the snacks our kids have access to when they’re away from home. That’s why, as a mom myself, I am so excited that schools will now be offering healthier choices to students and reinforcing the work we do at home to help our kids stay healthy.”

HEALTHY TIP OF THE WEEK
Did you know that, according to the American Heart Association, walking is the single most effective form of exercise to achieve heart health? Take a walk with your family after dinner a few nights this week rather than sitting on the couch watching TV!
