Lorre White reports, ‘Dubai ruler sets up Emirates Excellence Council’

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai and vice president and prime minister of the UAE, has announced the establishment of the Emirates Excellence Council in order to foster a “national culture that encourages all to achieve excellence” in the Gulf state.

The council will see all of the UAE’s existing local and federal excellence programmes brought under one umbrella. Sheikh Mohammed said that the organisation will help bolster government excellence in all sectors, create new opportunities and bolster the status of the UAE globally.

“Consolidation of efforts by local and federal entities, and integration of excellence programs will result in huge leaps in government performance, establish the stature of the UAE as a favorite destination for government best practices, and create a national culture that encourages all to achieve excellence in all services and businesses,” Sheikh Mohammed said during the Emirates Government Excellence Conference at Dubai’s Marriott Marquise hotel.

“Everyone has to be excellent. All employees have the desire to do that. Our job as officials is to provide a favourable environment to unleash the potentials of our sons,” he added.

Sheikh Mohammed also lauded the UAE’s latest ranking in the Global Competitiveness Yearbook 2013, issued by the International Institute of Management Development in Switzerland. The country ranked first globally for government efficiency and eighth most competitive in the world. It came in fourth in terms of economic performance.
