‘Nine stories, nine girls, nine countries’ (Afghanistan, Egypt, Peru, Nepal, India, Sierra Leone, Ethiopia, Cambodia and Haiti). Add nine women writers, a handful of celebrities, and you have the ingredients of “Girl Rising”, a documentary to be screened at UNESCO on 17 April 2013 at 7:30 p.m.
Amina, Yasmin, Senna, Suma, Ruksana, Mariama, Azmera, Sokhana and Wadley come from disadvantaged backgrounds but are shown following their dreams. Each girl is paired with a well-known writer from her native country, and their stories are narrated by Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Liam Neeson and other prominent film stars.
Produced by Intel Corporation and CNN Films, with the support of UNESCO, “Girl Rising” shows the power of education to change the world. The film is part of 10×10, an international campaign for girls’ education.,
UNESCO believes that investing in girls and women’s education has the potential to break the poverty cycle and achieve social justice. The Organization works to promote equal opportunities to quality learning, free from gender-based or other forms of discrimination. UNESCO ‘s partnership for girls’ and women’s education, “Better Life, Better Future” focuses on reaching illiterate or semi-literate adolescent girls and scaling up women’s literacy programmes through partnerships with Nokia, Procter and Gamble, GEMS education, Microsoft, Apple and the Packard Foundation.
Have you seen Girl Rising yet? The film that has moved and inspired thousands is coming to the big screen! April 19-25, Girl Rising will be playing in 169 Regal theatres nationwide.
That could mean half a million more people see this beautiful film, and that’s a lot of attention for the critical issue of girls’ education. Plus, the more tickets sold, the more girls benefit. Proceeds from the film will go to the 10×10 Education Fund, which will be split among the impact and local partners of the film, including Girl Up, to help fund the work being done to support adolescent girls.
You can help make a difference by simply going to the movies.
