In a time of transition and turmoil, young people can help the world by being global citizens, according to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The Secretary-General was addressing a forum on leveraging science, technology, innovation and culture for the world’s young people, held at UN headquarters on Wednesday.
While youth have always had ideals, Mr. Ban said this generation is different as they can use social networks to demand change.
“I am happy to see so many tablets and phones here today, but many young people do not have access to this technology. You must work to close this digital divide. And we have to pay special attention to women and girls. They have every bit as much potential as men and boys when it comes to science and technology. Anyone can wear a lab coat regardless of their gender. Anyone can look through a microscope.”
Mr. Ban encouraged young people to find their own path in life and never forget the UN ideals of peace, development and human rights.
