Womenleadership002Due to the increasing popularity of Women’s Leadership: Strategies for Success, a spring cohort beginning April 24, 2013 has been added.

Dr. Joyce Evans,
senior program director, Division of Undergraduate Education at the National Science Foundation (NSF), says the most valuable aspect of Brookings Executive Education’s Women’s Leadership Program is the sharing of diverse experiences by women in other agencies throughout government.

Joyce commented that, “It is important to be able to have a positive comparison with a group of women in similar positions in government. It is also essential to learn of the different cultures and set of expectations in different agencies.”

Joyce said that the insights she gleaned from other participants has been instrumental to the development of her leadership capabilities at NSF.

Similarly, Brigadier General Julie Bentz, Ph.D., director, National Security Staff commented, “The Brookings Women’s Leadership Program spotlighted all the issues that I encounter regularly. It was highly valuable to understand other perspectives on what makes an effective leader, especially in government.”

In six one-day seminars over the course of eight months, participants will address content such as emotional intelligence, work-team dynamics, authentic leadership, and communication. Guest speakers have included former Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Carol Browner, Hanna Rosin, author of The End of Men, and U.S. Park Police Chief Teresa Chambers. These highly interactive sessions include a variety of networking opportunities, group-mentoring conversations, and peer-to-peer coaching.

A key part of the cohort experience is the networking among female public servants during the SES Hosted Mentor Breakfasts, where participants meet with executive-level female leaders for engaging discussions surrounding the session topic of the day. Alumnae have found the mentor conversations to be not only useful as an outlet for advice and guidance, but instrumental to their growth and development in their careers.

New for Spring 2013:

Our Women’s Leadership program now includes access to our Individual Development Pathway [survey], a 180-degree online assessment which addresses 26 of the 28 competencies in the Office of Personnel Management’s ECQ model. The assessment report provides data on opportunities for personal development and will be used as a learning tool throughout the program.
