The Department of State initiated a Women in Science Hall of Fame in 2010 to honor outstanding female scientists throughout the Middle East and North Africa. New hall of fame members are selected annually for their accomplishments, and we hope to develop a strong network of professional women scientists across the region.
Dr. Boshra Salem, president of the MAB International Coordinating Council and Chair of the Department of Environmental Sciences of the Alexandria University (Egypt), was selected as a member of the Women in Science Hall of Fame – 2013.
As an expert on sustainable development in arid lands and a leading ecologist, Dr. Salem applies remote sensing and geographic information systems to monitor and conserve Egypt’s resources.
She has worked on desert development and devised a solar desalination project to benefit Bedouin communities in eleven countries.
Dr. Salem received her PhD from Imperial College London in 1989 and completed post-doctoral studies at the University of London and the University of Maryland.
